A method and apparatus for creating a generalized response model for a sheet forming machine are provided. Sheet property profiles are measured while the setpoint of an actuator is changed. A response (or change) profile of the sheet property resulting from a setpoint change is calculated. A finite set of critical points are selected from the property response profile. Using the selected critical points, the property response profile is classified in one of a finite number of response types. Under each of the response types, the property response profile is fitted with a plurality of continuous functions associated therewith. These continuous functions are combined to form the response model that minimizes the deviation between the property response and the fitted combination of continuous functions.

A system and method is disclosed for intelligent power management of actuators such as those used in papermaking. Multiple power supply units are connected to a common power bus. The power bus is connected at predetermined locations to a communications bus. The communications bus is connected in series with all of the actuators. The actuators are arranged in predetermined groups. A computing device determines if electrical power can be supplied to some or all of the actuators that are requesting simultaneous movement and if there is insufficient power for all such actuators the computing device issues permission for actuators to move based on a preselected criteria.

A single-sided web stabilizer for stabilizing a continuous moving web for making various web property measurements. The arrangement is characterized by a nozzle having a central structure, which may be a protrusion, surrounded by an annular opening through which air is emitted to generate a suction proximate the nozzle. The nozzle may be a Coanda nozzle, or may generate suction via a vortex flow. Two nozzle arrangements are provided, one sheet-contacting, where the sheet is drawn against the protrusion, and another sheet non-contacting, where an air bearing is provided between the protrusion end surface and the moving web to space the sheet from the protrusion. To provide a central air bearing the protrusion may be provided with an aperture or apertures through which air is expelled.

A dual sided sheet surface property sensor has the capability to simultaneously measure both sides of a moving sheet at the same location of the sheet on the top and bottom surfaces of the sheet. The energy directed to each side of the sheet may include UV, visible light, infrared, radio frequency, microwave, broadband, or X-ray. The sensor has a source and associated detector on each side of the moving sheet and each source provides energy at a different modulation frequency and the associated detector is responsive only to that frequency.

Fast cross direction caliper control recovery time in a sheet making machine during startup of the machine after a sheet break is achieved provided that a preselected time duration measured from the occurrence of the sheet break to the clearing of sheet break has elapsed. One or both of calender stack conditioning and conditioning of a measurement from a sensor for measuring caliper of the sheet, both with feedback CD control suspended, can be selectably performed. These operations can be performed concurrently if the selected time duration for both are identical. A closed loop change in a set of control tuning parameters of a PI controller providing feedback caliper control of actuators associated with the calender stack can be performed after either or both of the other operations are performed.

This invention relates to a three−stream atomizing nozzle for use with a rewet shower. The nozzle (22) has an air stream divider that separates the atomizing air from the source into three streams. The first stream is a straight air stream staying closest to and around the atomized water jet. The second stream is a swirl running around the first straight stream. The third stream is also a straight stream that wraps around the first straight stream and the second swirl. The nozzle also has a mixing chamber (74) in which the three air streams are mixed together for the atomizing purpose. The nozzle (22) can from the combination of the three air streams produce fine water droplets that are suitable for a paper rewet shower and more importantly creates a tailorable water mass profile. The mass profile can be tailored into a shape that is close to a square shape which is ideal for rewet showers as a square profile creates minimal coupling between adjacent zones.

A method is described for using the partial least squares (PLS) technique for modeling, predicting and controlling curl and twist in a paper machine. The prediction variables to the model are selected quality control system measurements and paper machine variables. The selection is based on incremental error analysis of individual prediction variables and can be improved using score contribution analysis. The predicted variables to the model are the curl and twist measurements which are determined from the samples taken at the end of the reel. The PLS model is identified and used in an on-line framework and the model is continuously updated with new data as required. A control strategy to use the PLS model for controlling curl and twist is included. There is also described a method which uses as inputs to the model only the measurements from a fiber orientation sensor and the curl and twist measurements.

A steam distributor (1) that uses a porous metal plate to replace the conventional screen plate (3) of a steam shower for distributing steam to a moving web (2) such as the web of a paper making machine. Steam showers using a steam distributor with this porous metal plate can deliver extremely uniform steam to the surface of a paper web. Profiling steam showers constructed by using an array of the steam distributors are able to deliver the best profiling results for various paper products. The porous metal plate can be considered as an equivalent of a screen plate with thousands of micro-orifices arranged tightly in both the machine direction and the CD direction.
