The system also includes an induction heating workcoil (202, 302) configured to generate currents (216) within the roll. The induction heating workcoil is unbalanced and is oriented so that minimal currents flow in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the roll. The induction heating workcoil could include one or more substantially U-shaped or C-shaped cores (206) and at least one coil (204) each wound around at least one of the one or more cores. Also, the roll may further include a shaft (308) and bearings, and the induction heating workcoil can be positioned so that the currents do not flow substantially through the bearings.

One or both of calender stack conditioning and conditioning of a measurement from a sensor for measuring caliper of the sheet, both with feedback CD control suspended, can be selectably performed. These operations can be performed concurrently if the selected time duration for both are identical. A closed loop change in a set of control tuning parameters of a PI controller providing feedback caliper control of actuators associated with the calender stack can be performed after either or both of the other operations are performed.

The production and operation of high-performance press-rollers having the usual design always entails considerable production and maintenance costs to set and maintain the pressure in the working slit of the roller arrangement at a constant value over the length of the roller. The new roller arrangement avoids the undesirable warping of the rollers. The roller arrangement has a magnetic circuit that includes both rollers. The magnetic circuit consists of a cylindrical magnetic core (4), several poles (5) axially distributed on the magnetic core, a cylindrical exciter (3) and control windings (14) arranged between said poles, a magnetic shell that encloses the whole circumference of one roller and is made of two parts separated by a ring-shaped secondary air gap (11), and a continuous magnetic shell in the axial direction arranged at the outer circumference of the other roller. When used to process webs of material in the textile, paper, plastic and metallurgical industries, this electromagnetic roller arrangement achieves high quality standards with a high productivity. The solution provided by the invention is shown on the figure above.
