A slice blade assembly for various produce items is provided. A circular array of V-shaped blades is carried in an outer support ring. Each blade is held in place by a new non-welded block and nut which interlock with bent tabs formed at the tips of each blade. Each blade is adjustable since each blade is bendable at its apex. Each worn or damaged blade may be removed and replaced without replacing the block and nut that support the blade.

A method and apparatus are provided for automatically packaging fish at high speeds into horizontally oriented cans. Two incoming streams of fish 6 are split into eight lanes, to achieve canning speeds of approximately twice the speed of prior art machines. Each incoming stream of fish is split into four separate processing streams or channels, primarily to reduce the operational speeds of the equipment components. Each incoming stream of fish is split by a first dividing knife 70 into two forming chambers 61, 62 carried by an intermittently moving turning wheel 40. The fish is split again by knives 80, 110 located at second and third work stations of the rotating turning wheel. Four fish cakes are formed simultaneously at the second and third work stations 42, 43 and simultaneously discharged downwardly into horizontally oriented cans.

A method of and apparatus for removing material from the surface of produce such as fruit and vegetables employs a rotating cage (4) defined by an annular array of rotatable rollers (6) provided with surfaces to remove such material and arranged vertically. In order to control the residence time of produce as it falls by gravity through the cage, and is centrifugally urged into contact with the rollers (6), there is provided a member to control residence time, this generally being a continuous or brush type auger (20) although in some embodiments residence is controlled by means of the rollers offering upwardly facing surfaces to resistance gravitational downward motion of produce.

An apple orienting apparatus is provided wherein one or more agitating spools are utilized to constantly agitate and rotate an apple until it is properly oriented. The agitator spools are mounted in an eccentric or off-center fashion to produce a wobble or eccentric motion in addition to rotational motion. The mechanism is especially useful with elongated apples but also is effective in orienting relatively round apples as well.
