An apparatus for slicing apples is provided. The slicer utilizes blades with a thickness less than 300 microns, and preferably between 180 and 220 microns. Each of the blades is supported against bending, warping or twisting by a clinch buckle which rigidly supports the outer end or ends of each blades. The clinch buckle is rigidly connected to bent tabs formed at the outer end or ends of each blade and supports the outer ends across the full width of the blades. The clinch buckle is supported by an outer blade support ring and is captured by the outer support ring to prevent rotation of the clinch buckle. The blades are configured to reduce cell damage, to reduce the amount of sealant or neutralizer needed to slow or prevent oxidation of enzymes released from cells ruptured by slicing, and to delay the onset of browning. A serrated blade is used to further reduce the extent of cell damage.

A method and apparatus are provided for automatically packaging fish at high speeds into horizontally oriented cans. Two incoming streams of fish (6) are split into eight lanes, to achieve canning speeds of approximately twice the speed of prior art machines. Each incoming stream of fish is split into four separate processing streams or channels, primarily to reduce the operational speeds of the equipment components. Each incoming stream of fish is split by a first dividing knife (70) into two forming chambers (61, 62) carried by an intermittently moving turning wheel (40). The fish is split again by knives (80, 110) located at second and third work stations of the rotating turning wheel. Four fish cakes are formed simultaneously at the second and third work stations (42, 43) and simultaneously discharged downwardly into horizontally oriented cans.

An apparatus and method are provided for moving a pear (7) from a roll orientor into a transfer cup (70) wherein an inclined pear stop shoe (40) is provided which contacts and guides the pear (7) down-wardly into the transfer cup (70) as the orienting rolls (31,32) separate. The rolls (31,32) are separated at a predetermined speed so that the roll (31) maintains contact with the pear (7) and helps guide the pear (7) into the transfer cup (70). The pear stop shoe (40) is retractable after the pear (7) is guided into the transfer cup (70) so that the pear (7) is supported only by the walls of the transfer cup (70).

A dry shuffle feed apparatus (10) is provided for use with produce (9) for feeding produce in a predetermined timing pattern to processing equipment (12). One or more shuffle conveyors (20, 120), each having multiple flights (21-26), are provided having an infeed chute (40) and return chute (60). Produce (9) enters the infeed chute (40) and is fed onto the conveyor (20), the infeed chute (40) having a multi-angulated surface (D, F, G, H) to prevent bridging of the produce (9). A return chute (60) extends upwardly alongside the conveyor from the infeed chute (40) and returns excess produce (9) to the infeed chute (40). The flights (21-26) on each shuffle conveyor (20, 120) become narrower nearer the output end of the conveyor (20, 120) and overfed produce (9) falls off the conveyor onto the return chute (60).
