An adjustable steering column assembly comprises a steering column shroud (1, 2), a support bracket (4), and a clamp mechanism. The support bracket comprises two arms (5, 6) having a portion of the column shroud located therebetween. The clamp mechanism comprises a pin (8) that passes through slots (5a) in the arms and carries a fixed cam portion (10) and moving cam portion (11), relative rotation of the fixed cam portion and moving cam portion causing the clamp mechanism to move between a locked position and an unlocked position. The fixed cam portion has an anti-rotation feature that sits at least partially within one of the slots in one of the arms and which cooperates with the side walls (16a, 16b) of the slot to substantially prevent unwanted rotation of the fixed portion of the cam mechanism. The anti-rotation feature carries at least one contact portion (15; 24a, 25a; 36, 41) that in use contacts the side walls of the slot as the steering column is adjusted and the contact portion and side walls are configured such that in use the anti-rotation feature does not cause any significant permanent deformation of the side walls due to preferential deformation of the contact portion.

Each of the reflector assemblies preferentially reflects one wavelength of the incident radiation or preferentially removes at least one wavelength of the incident radiation that is not preferentially reflected or removed by the other reflector assembly. The device further comprises modulating means for modulating the control signals applied to the reflector assemblies as a function of the value of the output signal from the sensor so as to modulate the fractions of incident light reflected by the display.

A clamp assembly secures a fixed portion of a steering column assembly to a movable portion of a steering column. It comprises a rack of teeth carried by the moving portion and a rack of teeth (111, 112) carried by the fixed portion and an inner hollow toothed block (120) nested inside an outer hollow toothed block (130), each carrying at least one rack of teeth with the rack- of teeth on the inner block tracing the rack of teeth on the moving portion and the rack of teeth on the outer block facing the rack of teeth on the fixed portion. A retaining clip (180) provides a lost motion coupling between the retaining clip and the inner toothed block (120) and an independent motion coupling between the retaining clip and the outer toothed block (130). First, second and third springs (140, 150, 160) bias the teeth of the blocks (120, 130) into and out of engagement with the racks when locked and unlocked. The assembly helps prevent damage to the teeth with the springs permitting the damage force on the blocks to be independently absorbed.
