The network node is operable to communicate with at least a set of user equipment. The user equipment is operable to switch between an active mode in which communications with the network node can occur and an inactive mode in which the user equipment is dormant. The method comprising the steps of: determining when each user equipment within the set will switch to the active mode to communicate with the network node; and switching the network node from an inactive state in which the network node is dormant to an active state, in which communications with the user equipment can occur, when any of the user equipment within the set is in the active mode.

A method performed at a network node of transmitting control information to low complexity user equipment is disclosed. The control information is transmitted within a predetermined limited frequency bandwidth that the low complexity user equipment is configured to receive. The method comprises: transmitting within the limited bandwidth, user specific control information during first predetermined time periods and non-user specific control information during second predetermined time periods, wherein the first and second time periods do not overlap; and transmitting within the limited bandwidth in response to a network connection request from the low complexity user equipment further control information, the further control information being transmitted during further predetermined time periods, the further predetermined time periods overlapping with at least one of the first and second time periods; wherein the further control information is transmitted in a different non-overlapping frequency range to the user specific and non-user specific control information.

A method of controlling communication between a first network node and a second network node in a multi-carrier wireless communications system, network nodes and a computer program product are disclosed. The method of controlling communication between a first network node and a second network node in a multicarrier wireless communications system in which a predetermined set of a plurality of carriers are utilised to support communication between the first network node and the second network node, the predetermined set of the plurality of carriers comprising a primary carrier and at least one secondary carrier, comprises the steps of: determining an occurrence of an event requiring a change in the primary carrier; indicating to a third network node that a physical layer instruction is to be transmitted between said first network node and the second network node; and transmitting a physical layer instruction between the first network node and the second network node, the physical layer instruction encoding reselection information to cause the second network node to select a different carrier from the plurality of carriers as a new primary carrier. By sending the instruction using the layer one or physical layer, the speed at which the instruction can be transmitted between the network nodes is vastly increased, which enables fast switching to occur, thereby preventing a loss of communications between the network nodes. By indicating to a third network node that a physical layer instruction is to be transmitted between the first network node and the second network node, maintenance of synchronisation is simplified and unpredictable metwork behaviour is minimised.

The network node method of supporting device-to-device communication, comprises: detecting that a user equipment configured to communicate using a first cellular radio access technology supported by the network node is operable to support device-to-device communication with another user equipment using a second cellular radio access technology; and instructing the user equipment to reconfigure to communicate using the second cellular radio access technology even when no cellular coverage is available to the user equipment using the second cellular radio access technology. In this way, when a user equipment wishes to perform device-to-device communication then the network is able to reconfigure the user equipment to communicate using the second radio access technology to enable device-to-device communication with other user equipment regardless of whether the user equipment is within a cellular coverage area for that radio access technology. It will be appreciated that it would normally not be desirable for a network to reconfigure the user equipment when no cellular coverage would be provided as a consequence of that reconfiguration. However, such reconfiguration may be necessary in order to enable the user equipment to perform device-to-device communications.
