Aspects and embodiments described provide wireless telecommunications network node cell selection bias methods, network nodes and computer program products operable to perform those methods. In particular, there is provided: a wireless communication network user equipment cell selection bias method comprising: determining, for a cell in the wireless communication network, an indication of cell selection bias associated with a user equipment antenna configuration; assessing antenna configuration being implemented by the user equipment; and applying a cell selection bias in dependence upon the implemented antenna configuration. Also provided is a wireless communication network control node cell selection bias method comprising: determining, for a cell in the wireless communication network, an indication of cell selection bias associated with a user equipment antenna configuration; and communicating the indication of cell selection bias to user equipment operating in the wireless communication network. Aspects and embodiments allow the biasing value used in relation to a low power node or other network node to support a cell range expansion region determined in relation to user equipment antenna mode capability.

A method of establishing an association between user equipment configured to communicate with other user equipment via a direct radio link within a wireless communications network;, a computer program product and user equipment operable to perform that method. The method comprises: monitoring, at one of the user equipment configured to communicate via a direct radio link, for receipt of a beacon signal from one of the other user equipment; and if such a beacon signal is received, notifying the user equipment transmitting the received beacon signal of receipt of the beacon signal to establish an association with the user equipment transmitting the received beacon signal; and if no beacon signal is received, commencing transmission of a beacon signal and monitoring for receipt of a notification that the transmitted beacon signal has been received by one of the other user equipment to establish an association with the other user equipment responsible for transmission of that notification. Aspects and embodiments described may allow user equipment wishing to establish a device to device link with other user equipment to discover each other without each having to transmit a beacon signal.

A method of identifying femto base station handover targets for user equipment in a wireless communications network, a computer program product and a femto base station gateway are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: storing location history information identifying femto base stations previously visited by user equipment; receiving an indicator from user equipment identifying a detected femto base station as a handover target; and correlating said indicator against said location history information for that user equipment to identify those femto base stations hdving that indicator which have previously been visited by that user equipment as handover candidates. By using information identifying previously visited base stations, the number of potential handover targets can be dramatically reduced which in turn reduces the likelihood of an unsuccessful handover occurring and reduces the number of femto base stations which need to be unnecessarily prepared.

The user equipment comprises: monitoring logic, determining logic and notification logic. The monitoring logic is operable to monitor signals received from said serving cell and said second cell; the determining logic is operable to determine whether the signals received from said serving cell and said second cell meet predetermined cell reselection warning criteria, and the notification logic is operable, if said predetermined cell reselection warning criteria are met, to notify said serving cell of said impending autonomous user equipment cell reselection to said second cell. Accordingly, user equipment is operable to send an indication of cell reselection to a network prior to fully triggering a cell reselection procedure, thereby allowing a network to make preparations for an impending cell reselection event, thereby minimising potential disruption to a network user.
