In a multi series pulse width modulation inverter arrangement, an inverter arrangement which can continue the inverter operation, in particular, by preventing an overcurrent caused by an erroneous firing of a switching element therein is provided. The multi series inverter arrangement is constituted to be operative in three level mode and in two level mode. Even when an erroneous firing thereof due to noise is generated, the operation of the inverter unit (4) can be continued, the overcurrent due to the erroneous firing is eliminated, the present inverter arrangement can be used under a severe noise environment and outputs an AC output having a small amount of higher harmonics, moreover when the inverter arrangement is operating under a three level mode in a low efficiency region, the operating mode of the inverter arrangement is positively switched from the three level mode to the two level mode, thereby the operating efficiency of the inverter arrangement is enhanced.

If there is a possibility of a coolant of a cooler being frozen, switching elements are made to generate heat by feeding a current through the switching elements. Two kinds of sensors for measuring a temperature on the side of a heat receiving portion and the side of a heat radiating portion are installed for the cooler. The thermal resistance of the whole of the cooler is calculated from an amount of heat generated by the current of the switching elements, the temperature on the side of the heat receiving portion, the temperature on the side of the heat radiating portion. If the value of the thermal resistance is equal to or higher than a certain value, it is determined that the coolant is frozen. When it is determined that the coolant is frozen, the thermal resistance of the cooler is calculated, and warm-up operation is started.

The control system of an electric vehicle comprises a switching signal output device composed of a DC voltage detector for detecting a voltage value of a power converter for controlling the operation of a main motor and a contact point of the switching device, a travel distance computing device for computing a travel distance of the main vehicle, and a contact break position database storing in advance the position in which contact break occurs, wherein the device predicts entry of the vehicle in a section where contact break occurs by verifying the travel distance value and the contact break position database, and outputs a switching signal. In a power converter, the inverter device casing (20) and a heat receiving plate (18a, 18b) are insulated, and the heat receiving plate (18a, 18b) and a filter capacitor (7) are connected through a predetermined inductance. Since higher-harmonic current is bypassed to the filter capacitor (7) through a resonance filter which is constructed of the electrostatic capacity in a switching element and an inductance, induction trouble, which might otherwise be caused by higher-harmonic current leaking to the outside of an inverter device, can be reduced by a simple construction.
