Abstract:
This invention relates to a method of accelerated remediation or bioremediation of contaminated material using an apparatus comprising means for generating a treated contaminated material entraining air stream at a velocity sufficient for entraining the contaminated material therein. The contaminated material is entrained in the air stream and is then microenfractionated using the apparatus to form a microenfractionated contaminated material. Finally, the microenfractionated contaminated material is treated with at least one chemical amendment and/or one biological amendment by discharging the chemical amendment and/or one biological amendment from the apparatus thereby facilitating the accelerated remediation or bioremediation. The chemical amendment can comprise either a chemical oxidizing agent or a chelating agent.
Abstract:
An asphalt drum mixer (10) includes a rotating drum (12) within a fixed sleeve (32) which defines an annular chamber (34), and mixing tips (50, 58) mounted on the drum and in the annular chamber. The mixing tips (50, 58) pass through the hot mix asphalt laying in the bottom of the annular chamber (34) and mix and shear the hot mix asphalt and increase its residence time in the drum mixer (10). In one embodiment, the mixing tips may comprise curved scoop-like elements (50) which lift the hot mix asphalt higher than conventional paddles and greatly increase residence time of the mix in the drum (12) over conventional paddles. The quality of the mix is thus greatly improved. In another embodiment the mixing tips may comprise curved scoop-like elements (58) having slots (64) which greatly increase sheering of the hot mix asphalt, thereby further improving the quality of the mix.
Abstract:
The efficiency of a gas-liquid contacting process is greatly improved with stability by using a gas-liquid contacting apparatus which comprises: (A) a vessel for holding a liquid; and (B) a gas sparger unit immersed in the liquid comprising (a) a gas inlet tube; (b) a gas sparger box, the upper surface of which is provided with perforations through which the gas is bubbled, communicating with the gas inlet tube; and (c) a liquid-seal tube connected to the lower portion of the gas sparger box and extending downwardly and opening at the lower end. Two or more of the gas sparger boxes can be provided each communicating with the gas inlet tube through a manifold. Preferably, the gas sparger box or boxes are open upwardly and the open upper end is covered with a perforated rubber plate. This gas-liquid contacting apparatus is particularly useful in processes in which a large volume of a solid material is formed by a gas-liquid contacting reaction as in the production of precipitated calcium carbonate by the carbonation of milk of lime.
Abstract:
A mixer which provides axial flow in a non-uniform flow field, such as may be established by gas which is sparged into a medium being mixed in a tank, and provides large axial flow volume without flooding and withstands variable loads on the blades thereof, thereby providing for reliable operation. The mixer impeller is made up of paddle shaped blades, which near their tips (e.g., at 90% of the radius of the impeller from its axis of rotation) are of a width at least 40% of the impeller's diameter. The blades also having camber and twist. They are formed by establishing bending moments which form the blades into sections which are curved and flat, with the flat sections being at least in the center area of the base of the blades. The hub for attaching the blades to the shaft of the mixer has radially extending arms with flat surfaces. The base of the blades are spaced from the shaft to define areas therebetween. These areas are reduced in size, thereby limiting the passage of sparging gas between the blades and the shaft and the strength of the coupling between the blades and the shaft are enhanced by backing plates of width greater than the width of the arms. These backing plates are fastened between the arms and the flat sections of the blades. Bolts extending through aligned holes in the arms, backing plates and blades provide strong and secure attachment of the impeller blades to the shaft so that the impeller will operate reliably in the environment which provides variable loads on the blade.
Abstract:
@ The present invention provides a process for producing vinyl chloride resin in suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer by the user of a polymerization reaction equipped with a reflux condenser using an improved brumagine-type impeller equipped with auxiliary blade/s, and polymerization is started in a range of 0.8 to 1.0 of the water/monomer ratio, polymerization temperature is raised 3 to 10°C at polymer conversion being not more than 50 weight percent, with water being added in the course of polymerization not more than making up for the volumetrical contraction resulting from the progress of polymerization so that upon completion of polymerization the water/monomer ratio is controlled in a range of 1.0 to 1.4. The polyvinyl chloride resin obtained by the present process is superior in quality such as high bulk density and little fish eye with high productivity.
