Methods and apparatus are disclosed for maximizing the strength and deformability of dimensionally-reduced in-situ-formed composites. According the invention, the temperature of the composite is maintained at less than its recrystallization temperature as it is dimensionally reduced, such as by drawing it through one or more dies in a wire-drawing apparatus. The drawing speed and other parameters may be adjusted, as required, to control composite temperature.

A wire drawing machine having a watching system of the wire (9) diameter at one or more watched locations in the machine. The diameter is measured by measuring the wire speed as compared to the reference wire speed at a reference location where the diameter is accurately known and held in a register (3). This value, together with both speed values, are sent to a computer module (6) for calculating the wire diameter and sending this to the output (29,30). When a new wire enters in the drawing machine, the operation is temporarily inversed : the lastly computed diameter is temporarily taken as the reference diameter and stored in the register (3), and from there the new reference diameter at the entrance is calculated and entered in the register (3).

A wiredrawing machine is composed of a plurality of stages in cascade, each stage comprising a die (13) through which passes the wire (14) which is partially wound around a motor-driven tension pulley (12). The tension pulley (12) is kinematically connected to a gear wheel (21) which meshes with a pinion (20) supported by a lever (23) to enable it to rotate around the outer edge of the gear wheel (21). Keyed onto the pinion (20) is a first pulley (19) around which winds a section of a belt (18) driven by a second expanding pulley (17) driven by a motor (16). The lever (23) is connected to spring members (24) which rotate the pinion (20) around the gear wheel (21) in a direction in which it tightens the belt (18).

Bei einem Verfahren zum Steuern und Regeln der Antriebsgeschwindigkeit von Ziehscheiben (2) bei einer mehrstufigen, gleitlos und im Geradeauszug arbeitenden Drahtziehmaschine, in der jedem Ziehstein (3) eine Ziehscheibe (2) zugeordnet und jede Ziehscheibe mittels eines drehzahlgeregelten oder drehzahlgesteuerten Antriebes (7) angetrieben wird ist vorgesehen, daß in der Anlaufphase der Drahtziehmaschine die Anpassung der Drehzahlen der einzelnen Ziehscheibenantriebe (7) an die prozeßbedingten Parameter (Drahtdurchmesser bzw. Drahtquerschnittsabnahme) in einer Sollwert-Kaskade über eine Tastrollen-Lageregelung erfolgt, die die Sollwert-Kaskade automatisch abgleicht, wobei der Abgleich proportional zu den Drehzahlverhältnissen der Ziehscheibenantriebe und unabhängig von den absoluten Drehzahlen bzw. Sollwerten ist, und daß über einen Steuerbefehl an die Tastrollen-Lageregelung die Tastrollen (4) langsam in eine Endlage zum kontinuierlichen Übergang in den direkten Geradeauszug überführt werden und die weitere Regelung der Anriebsgeschwindigkeit von dem bekannten Gegenzugregelungs- bzw. steuerungsverfahren im Geradeauszug übernommen wird und die Tastrollen (4) aus dem Drahtbereich herausgesteuert werden.

Apparatus for the cold working or hot rolled steel rod comprises a set of freely rotatable pulleys (18, 20) around which the rod runs. The set of pulleys as a whole is driven for orbital revolution. The rod is twisted in one direction as it enters the pulley system and is untwisted as it leaves. The rod is pulled through the pulley system by a rotatable coiler downstream of the system against braking effort imparted to the rod upstream of the system whereby the rod is pulled through under tension. Drive (24,26) for the orbital motion is from the coiler such that the orbital speed and rod feed are in a fixed relationship. Control of the transverse dimensions of the rod is imparted by a sensor downstream of the pulley system, the output from which is used to adjust the tension imparted by the braking pulley (34). The apparatus operates also to descale and straighten the rod continuously and is particularly useful in the production of steel rod for welded mesh in reinforcing concrete.
