A process of making paper or paperboard with improved ashretention relative to totalretention comprising the steps of providing a thick stock cellulosic suspension that contains filler, diluting the thick stock suspension to form a thin stock suspension, in which the filler is present in the thin stock suspension in an amount of at least 10% by weight based on dry weight of thin stock suspension, flocculating the thick stock suspension and/or the thin stock using a polymeric retention/drainage system, draining the thin stock suspension on a screen to form a sheet and then drying the sheet, in which the polymeric retention/drainage system comprises, i) a water-soluble branched anionic polymer and ii) a water-soluble cationic or amphoteric polymer, wherein the anionic polymer is present in the thick stock or thin stock suspension prior to the addition of the cationic or amphoteric polymer. The process brings about improved ash retention relative to total retention.

The invention relates to fine-particled polymer dispersions which contain starch and which are obtained by emulsion copolymerisation with redox initiators of ethylenically unsaturated monomers from the group containing (a) 45 - 55 wt. % of at least one, optionally substituted, styrene, methacrylic acid methylester, acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, (b) 15 - 29 wt.- % of at least one acrylic acid-C1-C12-alkyl ester and/or a methacrylic acid-C2-C12-alkyl ester and, (c) 0 - 10 wt.- % of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerisable monomer, in an aqueous medium in the presence of (d) 15 - 35 wt. % of a degraded cationised starch, which has a molar mass Mw of between 1000 - 65 000. The total (a) + (b) + (c) + (d) = 100 % and refers to the total content of solid material. The invention also relates to a method for producing said type of polymer dispersions by means of emulsion polymerisation of the monomers (a), (b) and (c) in an aqueous medium with redox initiators in the presence of (d) cationic starch and to the use of polymer dispersions containing starch as resizing agents for paper, pulp and cardboard.

There is disclosed a cationic crosslinked starch composition comprising at least one cationic crosslinked waxy starch and another starch. There is also disclosed paper products comprising the starch composition. The paper products are generally characterized by having improved internal bond strength. The use of the starch blends in the papermaking process results generally in improved paper furnish drainage and retention properties. Also disclosed are coating formulations containing the starch compositions of the present disclosure. Also disclosed are processes for producing the compositions.

A process that can be used for producing a starch product is provided. The process comprises heating a composition, which comprises or consists essentially of a starch, a polyacrylamide, and a multivalent cation. The weight ratio of starch to polyacrylamide is greater than about 2 to 1. The process can also comprise heating a composition, which comprises or consists essentially of a starch and a polyacrylamide to produce a heated composition followed by contacting the heated composition with a multivalent cation. The heating can be carried out at a pH above 7.0 if the polyacrylamide is a cationic polyacrylamide or nonionic polyacrylamide and, if the starch is a cationic starch and the polyacrylamide is an amphoteric polyacrylamide or anionic polyacrylamide, the heating neutralizes less than 75% of the cationic starch.
