摘要:
Optical fibers (1) which are disposed in parallel and at each other in a plane, are fixed in this position by pieces of tapes (3) provided with an adhesive (7) on their surfaces facing the fibers so that the tape pieces are located exactly opposite each other on the two large surfaces of the parallel fiber assembly. The tape pieces can extend exactly up to the lateral edges of the assembly but can advantageously be a little longer, so that adhesives from the opposite tape pieces come in contact with each other at the lateral edges of the assembly. The tape pieces are advantageously cut off from specially designed retainer tapes having openings which are provided in pairs with the openings of each pair placed opposite each other at each of the edges of the tapes. The assembly is placed so that it extends over the two openings of a pair of openings, crossing or perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the tapes. Then a cutting-off or more particularly two cuts are made in the tape, using knifes (17), only between the openings of the pair, from one opening to the other one. Then a piece of the tape between the openings is separated which adheres to the assembly and keeps it together. Between the knifes (17) a cushion (13) of an elastic material is provided which in a cutting-off movement presses the tapes in a direction towards a counterplate (15).

A method and kit for stripping resin skin from part of the length of an optical fiber ribbon, allowing access over that length to the optical fibers in the ribbon. The method is simple and the method and kit are environmentally friendly. A strong liquid adhesive, such as cyanoacrylate, is used, with a special panel made of one of either of two materials_neoprene or nitrile_especially suitable for bonding to the ribbon skin using a strong liquid adhesive. The special panel avoids two problems plaguing methods of the prior art: finding a flat clean work surface, and cleanup.

Provided is an improved optical fiber ribbon unit made of a plurality of coated optical glass fibers each further coated with a cured colored composition, and a matrix material which binds the plurality of colored optical fibers together. The bonding force between the cured colored composition and the coated optical fibers is greater than the bonding force between said cured colored composition and said matrix material, and the matrix material is selected or formulated to provide a modulus and Tg sufficiently high such that, when opposing pressure is applied to the ribbon unit using the fingers of a human hand, the matrix material buckles and separates from said colored coated optical fibers instead of compressing and absorbing the opposing pressure. Also provided are a method of making the ribbon unit, and a method of achieving mid-span access to individual optical fibers contained within the ribbon unit.

An apparatus for separating a ribbon-coated multicore optical fiber at a plurality of positions at once, which is excellent in separating operation. This apparatus is an apparatus for separating a ribbon-coated multicore optical fiber, in which a number of single-core fibers are arranged in parallel, into a plurality of fibers. This apparatus comprises a first cutting member in which a plurality of sets of arc faces opposed to each other by way of a through path for inserting the ribbon-coated multicore optical fiber are disposed along the through path, while the arc faces in the respective sets extend from one side section of the through path halfway through the width direction of the through path; a second cutting member having a plurality of arc faces which continuously extend to and are adapted to join with the respective arc faces of the first cutting member in the width direction of the through path; and guide members which are respectively disposed at both end positions of the through path so as to position the ribbon-coated multicore optical fiber inserted into the through path. The first and second cutting members are relatively movable to each other in the direction in which the arc faces are opposed to each other.

Provide is an optical fiber ribbon whereby a tape forming member can be easily removed after single core separation. The present invention is provided with: a plurality of optical fiber cores (10a, 10b) arranged in parallel spaced from each other; and a tape forming member (20) having coating portions (21a, 21b) covering an outer circumference of the optical fiber cores (10a, 10b), and a coupling portion (22a), integrally formed with the coating portions (21a, 21b), intermittently coupling adjacent optical fiber cores (10a, 10b), wherein the coating portions (21a, 21b) have opening portions (31, 32) to expose parts of surfaces of the optical fiber cores (10a, 10b), and at least a part of the coating portions (21a, 21b) is continuous in a longitudinal direction of the optical fiber cores (10a, 10b).

An optical fiber ribbon is capable of branching by means of any tool. The optical fiber ribbon is comprised of a plurality of optical fibers running in parallel, each of the optical fibers having an allowable radius of curvature; a blanket sheath totally covering the plurality of the optical fibers; one or more concavities formed at any one or more intermediates among the optical fibers; and slits respectively arranged in series at a regular interval along the concavities, the slits penetrating the blanket sheath and allowing the tool to be inserted and the blanket sheath to split by means of movement of the tool along theo concavities. The length of each slit prior to insertion of the tool is so determined that flexures of the optical fibers induced by the tool widening the slits do not exceed the allowable radius of curvature.
