The present invention provides a head of a drum or similar kind of musical instrument preferably comprising a synthetic plastic sheet material, which contains a surface with variegated color shadings to give the texture and appearance of a natural animal skin. The improved head also produces a more resonant and full sound with more overtones. The present invention also provides a method of manufacture of the improved drumhead. Fine sanding generally produces minor surface scratches, while a more intense sanding will produce deeper scoring or gouges in the surface of the head. A coating of resin is applied to the surface and collects in a concentrated manner within the scratched and gouged areas. Resin collects in the gouged areas, where the shading is relatively dark, and in the scratches, where the shading is lighter.

A head for a drum or similar musical instrument comprising a synthetic plastic sheet material (12) and a synthetic fabric material (10) having a random fiber orientation which is laminated thereto. The synthetic plastic sheet material remains the primary tension load carrier while the fabric material having nonorientated fibers is laminated thereto to distribute load without transferring stress into the plastic sheet material. thereby reducing the tendency of the plastic sheet material to dent as well as damping undesirable overtones, and to provide an improved brush surface. The synthetic fabric material is preferably impregnated with a water-based resin emulsion system to insure that the nonorientated individual fibers are elastomerically bonded together, thereby increasing the fabric materials' intralaminar integrity and to further enhance the tone quality of the laminated head. Lamination and impregnation in this manner provides a laminated head having an improved sound by increasing resonance and projection with a reduction of harmonic dissonance and provides a playing surface having improved brush response, thereby also resulting in improved brush sound.

The metallophone structure also comprises a mallet cradle configured to receive a mallet. The mallet is configured to actuate one of the tone producing devices. The metallophone structure is configured to be weather resistant such that each tone producing device still produces the sound frequency after an outdoor exposure period.
