An image frame to be printed is subjected to a three color separation and photometry by using three light receiving devices. In order to cancel a photometry error caused by the sensitivity crosstalk of each light receiving device, the measured light amount of each color is subjected to a matrix calculation. The corrected measured light amount by this matrix calculation is logarithmically converted into a measured density. In order to have a linear relationship between the color correction filter setting position and the measured density, the measured density is converted in a virtual measured density in the linear area. The virtual measured density is corrected by a 3 x 3 matrix calculation to cancel a photometry error caused by unwanted absorption of color correction filters.

Picture frames on a color photographic film (10) are image-picked up with a television camera (44), and the color images of the picture frames are displayed in a matrix arrangement on a color monitor (46a). In order to display color images of picture frames at the same dimension on the color display irrespective of the picture frame size of the color photographic film (10), a specific area from which pixels are picked up is determined in accordance with the picture frame size, and pixel thinning is performed. Pixels for an image taken as a full size on the 135 type color photographic film are thinned every second pixel in both the vertical and horizontal directions, and pixels for an image taken as a half size on the 135 type color photographic film are thinned every second pixel in the vertical direction within the specific area, and the vertical and horizontal addresses are interchanged to read the image data rotated by 90 degrees. Pixels for an image on a 110 type color photographic film are all picked from the specific area as the image data.

The color printing control system has a color printer (58) and a microprocessor (14). The output of photocells (52a, 52b, 52c) which read color negatives is applied to the microprocessor (14) enabling it to calculate print time signals. These signals are applied to paddles (32, 34, 36) and move them into the light path of terminate light exposure. A print test probe (59) coupled to the microprocessor (14) reads the density of the prints and forms a feedback loop which allows the microprocessor to adjust its internal values. Color balancing is performed without knowledge of paper characteristics and without operator setup calculations. This is achieved using the difference in density between a reference print and prints made by the system as a basis for calculating correction factors which are applied to such values as slope to cause subsequent print time signals to result in correct density.

The present invention concerns copying apparatus which automatically controls the quality of copies. The copying apparatus includes a density detector for detecting the frequency of occurrence of density values along a scanning line of a document to be copied, i.e., the frequency distribution of density values is determined. When the frequency distribution has at least three maxima, a smoothing device smoothes the frequency distribution via a predetermined filter function till the frequency distribution has one or two maxima. In the event the frequency distribution has one or two maxima, a density detecting device detects at least one density value according to a maximum or minimum value of the frequency distribution. A control device then controls the copy quality of a reproduced image according to the density value.

A printer control pictorial tool consists of an eye portion having a neutral gray, portraits arranged around the eye portion, and a gray background. The eye portion and the portraits are located within a photometric range that is equal to or less than a range covered by a photometry device of a photo-printer. The gray background has the same average gray density as the eye portion has. An area having a complementary color to a flesh color of the portraits is provided within the photometric range. The size, color and density of the portraits and the complementary color area are determined such that photometric values obtained from the photometric range are approximately equal to those obtained from the eye portion.
