A scanning system for scanning color film (30) of distinctive film types, each containing a plurality of color dyes representative of image content, comprises (a) a scanner for generating signals having separate channels corresponding to spectral sensitivities within the spectral absorption of each of the color dyes, and an additional channel corresponding to another spectral sensitivity within the spectral absorption of one of the color dyes; and (b) a processor for correlating signals from at least one of the separate channels and the additional channel to determine the type of film. More specifically, the processor correlates signals from a red channel within the spectral absorption of a cyan dye and an infra-red channel also within the spectral absorption of the cyan dye.

A method of calibrating digital images having pixels with pixel values includes the steps of: exposing a photographic element to form a latent image of a reference calibration target including a plurality of reference calibration patches; exposing the photographic element to form a latent image of a scene; processing the photographic element to form developed images from the latent images on the photographic element; scanning the developed images to produce digital images; measuring the pixel values of the digital image of the reference calibration target to produce a measured value for each of the reference calibration patches; obtaining an aim value and adjustment data corresponding to each reference calibration patch; generating image calibration corrections using the measured values, the aim values, and the adjustment data; and applying the image calibration corrections to the digital image of the scene.

The invention provides a processing system, comprising a detector to detect a unitary barcode on a film (8), the barcode (10) identifying the film and a camera, thereby identifying a film/camera combination; and, a memory to store a plurality of processing algorithms one or more of the processing algorithms corresponding to a particular film/camera combination and being optimised in relation to one or more of the parameters of the respective film/camera combination; and, a selector to select the corresponding processing algorithm on identification of the film/camera combination, to process optimally the film. The invention provides a system in which the use of custom designed algorithms specifically optimised for the film/camera or even film/camera-lens combination and the usage pattern of OTUCs, enables optimisation of output images from the film to be obtained.
