A parallel processing system for iteratively solving a set of equations in an array of parallel processors compresses the input data by sequentially shifting and averaging the initial values to form a reduced array of averaged data; solving the equations for the reduced data; and then succesively expanding the nth solution to form an (n+1)th approximation on an increased number of data points solving the equations on the data points and expanding the new solution to form the next approximation.

An optical arithmetic comparator (OAC) which is capable of comparing multiple numbers simultaneously, indicates the common value of the multiple numbers being compared if the numbers are equal. The OAC includes at least two input channels (1...3) each having a plurality of sources (10) arranged in an identical pattern, the sources (10) being capable of selective activation such that only one source is activated at a time within each of the channels (1...3) to form a specific spatial light pattern, and a detector array (18) which determines if the specific spatial light pattern indicated the numbers being compared are equal.

An optical information transmitting device for transmitting information on a light beam emitted by a light source, includes an electronic circuit board, and an optical input/output port mounted on the electronic circuit board. The optical input/output port has a glass substrate attached to the electronic circuit board, a first array of optical sensors for absorbing a portion of a light beam applied thereto from the light source and photoelectrically converting the portion of the light beam, and for transmitting the remainder of the light beam therethrough, and a second array of spatial light modulators for modulating the transmittance with respect to a light beam applied thereto, the first and second arrays being disposed on a surface of the glass substrate in superposed relationship to each other. A motherboard comprises a substrate and a coaxial lens array of lenses spaced at equal intervals along an optical axis on the substrate, with conjugate focusing planes of equal magnification being disposed between adjacent ones of the lenses. A method of manufacturing the motherboard is also disclosed.

In a method of recognising an optically encoded binary word, the word is chosen from a subset of binary words for which WOT=0 if W=T, WOT=1 if W¸T is true, where T is the target word, W is the word to be compared and O is the operation formula (I). The word is recognised by carrying out in the optical domain a bit-wise Boolean AND operation. The operation is carried out on the word to be recognised and the complement of the target word. The AND operation may be carried out by introducing the word to be recognised and the target word into a nonlinear crystal and detecting the second harmonic output from the crystal. The complement of the target word may be generated by a fixed word-forming network. The method may be applied to recognising the address of a packet on an optical network.
