Pour fabriquer un complexe étanche comportant une armature interne et destinée, notamment, à la fabrication de ballons aérostatiques, on réalise une armature (10) non tissée, formée de fils de chaîne et de fils de trame disposés en deux couches superposées. On applique sur chacune des faces de cette armature, avec une force prédéterminée, un film de recouvrement (16a,16b), après l'avoir amené à sa température de fusion pâteuse sur un tambour chauffant (30a,30b). Le caractère non tissé de l'armature permet de préserver l'étanchéité des films de recouvrement lors du complexage. De plus, la formation de bouclettes sur les bords du complexe ainsi obtenu permet d'introduire des câbles de liaison facilitant la reprise des contraintes.

A fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite structure incorporates a woven preform containing tows of carbon or other advanced fibres (1,3) and wires (2,4) of shape memory alloy (SMA). The SMA wires are capable of absorbing much larger amounts of strain energy than the conventional components of FRP composites and hence enhance the impact resistance of the structure. The woven form incorporates the SMA into the structure in an optimum manner in terms of handling and performance.
