    摘要: An automatic welder is used in an internal welder unit which travels along the interior of a pipeline and welds the abutting ends of the pipe segments together. The automatic welder has a carriage assembly that contains a laser source for producing a laser beam, first and second line-up clamp assemblies for aligning the respective abutting ends of the pipe segments together, at least one laser bean conductor, or alternatively a reflecting surface positioned between said first and second line-up clamp assemblies along the axis of said beam, for directing said beam to the abutting ends of said first and second pipe segments, and a drive for rotating the reflecting surface around the axis of said beam to direct the beam to the abutting ends of said pipe segments for welding said pipe segments together. The automatic welder can also be configured as an external welder in which the automatic welder carrying a laser source is carried on a track mounted on the outside of the pipeline. As the external welder orbits around the pipeline, the laser source generates a laser beam which is directed at the junction of the abutting ends of the pipe segments for welding them together.

The apparatus (18) can be part of a combination plug clamp and inspection apparatus (12) or used independently of the plug clamp (12). The TV camera (20) is aimed along the center line axis (52) of the apparatus and pipeline and a mirror (76) reflects the image of a portion of the weld into the lens of the camera. The mirror can be rotated to allow the entire circumference of the weld to be inspected. A weighted ring (102) provides a reference relative to the vertical independent of the orientation of the apparatus within the pipeline.

    摘要: An automatic welder is used in an internal welder unit (30) which travels along the interior of a pipeline and provides the interior weld passes at the junction of abutting pipe joints (32, 33). The internal welder unit (30) has an electronic control system which includes a plurality of microprocessor control units (92, 94, 96, 98), each of which performs specific functional operations for the internal welder unit (30). The control system directs the operation of orbiting internal welders (140) to have a zero or slow travel speed at a start point to ensure a high reliability of arc initiation. After the arc is started, the travel speed of the internal welders (140) is accelerated to a high speed rate for the majority of the weld pass. At then end of the weld pass, the welders (140) travel rate and wire feed rate are suddenly reduced to zero for the weld termination.

    摘要: An internal mandrel (10) is disclosed which is used for supporting the inner wall (30) of a pipe (12) during bending. The internal mandrel includes a urethane plug (31) which is compressed between the piston (60) of a hydraulic cylinder (56) and an end plate (36). This expands the urethane radially outward into contact with the inner wall (30) of the pipe to support the pipe during bending. Resilient steel strips (88) can be mounted on the exterior surface of the urethane plug (31) at the inside bend of the pipe to increase the effective wall thickness of the pipe at the inner bend to reduce the likelihood of deformation during bending. In a second embodiment, internal mandrel (200) includes an annular urethane plug (204) positioned between a resilient cylinder (202) and the inner wall of the pipe (12).

    摘要: A pipe bending machine has a stiff-back which is driven by a pivoting wedge. A linkage applies force from the actuator to the wedge in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the stiff-back. The stiff-back pivots on a first fulcrum and the wedge slides on a bed which pivots on a second fulcrum. The actuator drives the wedge between the stiff-back and the bed to rotate the stiff-back at the first fulcrum and bend the pipe seated in the stiff-back against the pipe bending face of a die. The conversion of the longitudinal force applied to the wedge into a transverse force applied to the stiff-back provides a significant mechanical advantage which varies directionally as the stiff-back rotates about its fulcrum to maintain a constant force on the stiff-back.
