    摘要: A method for cold working holes employs an automatic riveting machine that is fed with memory metal sleeves (6) having an O.D. slightly smaller than a hole (2) to be worked. A mandrel (10) is forced into the sleeve and plastically expands the sleeve in the hole thereby working the hole wall around the sleeve. The mandrel is withdrawn and the sleeve is thermally induced to return to its initial shape memory O.D. permitting removal of the shrunken sleeve from the work hole.

    摘要: A method of passively determining the range to a target from a test platform is disclosed. It comprises traveling at a constant velocity a course (28) in the test plat­form which is straight; detecting at the platform the presence of an energy signal radiating form the target (20), and sampling said energy signal at three discrete times; generating for each of said energy signal samples a first detection signal responsive to its angle (ϑ) of arrival at the platform, and a second detection signal responsive to its frequency on arrival at the platform; storing said detection signals; determining the range to the target utilizing said stored detection signals and said test platform velocity and position; and generat­ing a target indication signal representative of the range of the target.     摘要: Wind tunnel data for a three control surface aircraft (10) is developed for lift, pitching moment, and drag coefficient characteristics. This data is then input into a Lagrange optimization program to determine a unique combination of canard, flap, (18) and strake flap (20) positions that trimmed the pitching moment coefficient to zero and provided the minimum drag coefficient as a function of lift coefficient and/or angle of attack, Mach number, and altitude. This program is exercised over the entire Mach number, altitude, and angle of attack range of the aircraft. The output from the Lagrange optimization program are then tabulated and loaded into the memory of a digital flight control computer (34) of an aircraft. As the aircraft flies, the angle of attack sensor (26), air data sensor and altimeter (32), determine the angle of attack, Mach number and altitude of the aircraft. By means of the computer, the position of the control surfaces are changed to the predetermined settings of the look-up table for minimum drag.

    摘要: Holographic optical elements which operate at a multiplicity of wavelengths and which have reduced aberrations and a process for manufacturing the same are disclosed. The achromatic holographic elements are fabricated using substantially conventional apparatus employing a technique based on the phenomenon that any two playback wavelengths will be diffracted to the same angle if their construction angles are related to each other as the inverse of the ratio of their sines. In addition, in the case of holographic lenses, if the focal points during construction are related to each other as the inverse of the ratio of the sines of their construction angles, the diffracted wavelengths will be brought to a common focal point. When used with a thick recording medium, the technique produces an optical element with a symmetrical pair of output beams having two independent focal points.

The band can be segmented into annular side-by-side hoop-like coaxial band elements (30) either of the same or of different diameters. An elastomer (32) bonded between adjoining circumferential edges of the band elements connects them for co-operative association to give the band its desired operating characteristics. The, elasticity of the elastomer and the spacing between the band elements can be selected to tailor the performance of the band. Preferably the bending stiffness of the band is 1000 times as great circumferentially as it is transversely across the band.

    摘要: @ A run-flat pneumatic tire 10 has a compression element 36 of annular structure on an inside surface 38 of the crown 22 thereof, which compression element 36 is stabilized by a multiplicity of closely spaced spoke-like radial elements 32 in the tire sidewalls 24 such that de-pressurized operation of the tire without damage is possible. The compression element 36 is a helix with closely spaced coils wound from a rod of a cross-sectional shape selected from various solid and tubular configurations. Round, square, and rectangular coil cross-sectional configurations are disclosed, as are interlocking convex/concave and tongue/groove arrangements. The helical compression element 36 is installed in the tire 10 by winding up the helix to reduce its diameter such that it can pass through bead portions 26 of the tire, or by introducing one end of an end coil of the helix over one of the bead portions 26 into the interior of the tire 10 and effecting relative rotation to feed the helix into the tire. The compression element 36 can be bonded in place and can also be preloaded by various means.
