The invention relates to a melt-processable anisotropic aromatic polymer that contains units derived from an aromatic diacid, aromatic hydroxy acid, aromatic diol and anthraquinone. The polymer is characterized in that it contains 0.1-25 mol.% units derived from 1,5-, 2,6-and/or 2,7-diaminoanthraquinone. The polymer according to the invention has a high degree of thermal stability combined with a high modulus of elasticity and good ultimate strength. Surprisingly, the mechanical properties show reduced anisotropy while the properties in machine direction are retained.

The invention relates to a melt-processible aromatic (co)polymer composition containing: 1-99 wt.% of a liquid crystalline polymer, and 99-1 wt.% of a polymer derived from units, capable of forming a liquid crystalline polymer, and from one or more triazine units according to the formula (I) where R 1 is an amino group, R 2 and R 3 is an (alkyl)carboxyl-, an (alkyl)hydroxy- and/or an amino group. Besides excellent mechanical properties, the (co)polymer composition according to the invention possesses an improved thermal shock resistance. The (co)polymer composition is eminently suited for use in objects for the electrical industry and the aircraft industry.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polyesters. The polyesters are prepared by causing a dicarboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid derivative and a diol in a molar ratio between 1:1.8 and 1:2.2 to react in an esterification reaction in a first step to form an OH-terminated prepolyester with an Mn of at most 600 and then converting the prepolyester obtained with a dicarboxylic anhydride into a COOH-terminated oligoester in a second step, via a ring opening reaction, after which, in a third step, the oligoester obtained reacts with a monocarboxylic acid glycidyl ester via a ring opening reaction.
