The invention relates to a surgical light and to a method for illuminating an operating field on a human body using the surgical light. The surgical light comprises a lighting element (1), a controller (4), and at least one separate functional module (6, 7). The lighting element (1) has at least one lighting means (3) for illuminating the operating field and at least one first interface with a first securing device, a power supply connection, and/or a data connection. The controller (4) is provided in order to actuate the at least one lighting means (3) and is connected to the data connection of the at least one first interface in order to transmit data. The at least one functional module (6, 7) has a second interface with a second securing device, a second power supply connection, and/or a second data connection which is compatible with the first interface and can be docked to the first interface. The lighting element (1) further has a detection device for detecting the type of functional module (6, 7) which is docked to the first interface, and the controller is adapted so as to control the at least one lighting means (3) depending on the type of the docked functional module (6, 7).
