The rewriting of one access unit (a page) of data stored in non-volatile memory 1 is executed by erase and write cycles, data being protected from loss in the event of an interruption in electric power. . When rewriting into second data the first data which is stored in a data storage area 10a of the non-volatile memory, either the first or the second data is stored in a save area 11 of the non-volatile memory 1, and the first data in the data storage area 10a is erased only after data has been entered in the save area 11. Thereafter the writing of the second data in the non-volatile memory, into data storage area 10a, and, if necessary a previously blank data storage area 10x, takes place to complete rewrite operation. The rewriting takes place under control of a processor 4. A memory 2 holds the first and second data temporarily during the rewrite operation. Read and write of non-volatile memory 1 and temporary storage memory 2 are effected by a memory controller 6 and a direct memory access device 7.

The conversion circuits INFN, INFM are adapted to convert serial data into parallel data and vice versa. A cable LN connects the conversion circuits. Decoder circuits (DEC1 and DEC2) are incorporated in the machine 2. These decoder circuits pass control data to, or monitoring data from, the machine 2. Parallel data from or for the decoder circuits DEC1 and DEC2 is converted into serial data so that the exchange of data between the machine 2 and the numerical control apparatus 1 is in a bit-serial manner through the cable LN. For example, machine elements RL, to RL N corresponding to address signals are activated in accordance with data transmitted bit-serially from the numerical control apparatus 1 or, alternatively, the states of the machine elements (RC, to RC 2 ) corresponding to the address signals are read in a parallel manner and transmitted bit-serially to the numerical control apparatus 1. The address signals may be transmitted over line LN to the decoder circuits DEC1, DEC2 in the machine 2. Alternatively address signals may be generated in the machine 2 on the basis of clock (CLK) and synchronization (SYNC) signals from the numerical control apparatus 1.
