A method and system for transmitting digital data by extending the sequence numbering range for a selective repeat transmission protocol are described. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, data frames (70) are transmitted including an eight-bit sequence number (72) and a one-bit retransmit flag (74). The one-bit retransmit flag (74) indicates whether the frame is newly transmitted or retransmitted due to a failed first transmission. Transmit (50) and receive (52) systems each maintain a twelve-bit sequence number referred to as a "long sequence number" comprised of the eight-bit sequence number transmitted with each frame and a four-bit extension. The long sequence number is transmitted within a control frame (82) and the eight-bit sequence number is transmitted within the data frame (72).

A power control system for use in facilitating transition to an active state. The system includes a first transceiver (104), such as a BTS, having the ability to initiate transmission of a power control function. The transceiver (104) comprises a generator (210) and a transmitter (202) for the power control arrangement. The system further includes a second transceiver (106), such as a terminal, for receiving the power control arrangement and coherently combining the power control arrangement to determine a state transition indication. The second transceiver (106) includes a transmitter (204) that transmits a selected waveform subsequent to the coherent combining. The first transceiver (104) receives the selected waveform, determines a power level associated therewith, and provides feedback to the second transceiver (106). The power control arrangement may include groups of redundant power control data, data transmitted on idle feedback dimensions, or predetermined signal patterns in addition to at least one power control group.

Method and apparatus for encrypting transmission traffic at separate protocol layers L1 (220), L2 (210), and L3 (200) so that separate encryption elements (204) can be assigned to separate types of transmission traffic (201, 203, 205), which allows the implementation of different levels of encryption according to service requirements. Encryption elements (204) use variable value inputs, called crypto-syncs, along with semi-permanent encryption keys to protect from replay attacks from rogue mobile stations. Since crypto-sync values vary, a method for synchronization and authentificated registration of crypto-syncs is also presented. Crypto-scancs can be built expediently for each different type of traffic frame by using different system resources. In one embodiment, a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) can be used to verify crypto-syncs.

When insufficient traffic is present in the network to maintain synchronization in this manner, other methods must be used. One approach involves making direct measurements of the timing between base stations (602, 604). This is accomplished in one of two ways. The base may interrupt its transmissions on all sectors for a short interval during which it determines the time of arrival of signals from other base stations (602, 604). Given knowledge of the other base station locations, time errors relative to all other base stations (602, 604) may be derived. Alternatively, the base may send a short signal at high power in the mobile transmit band. This time-of-arrival of this signal is measured by the surrounding base stations and the time errors between pairs of base stations are computed. In some cases, a base station (602, 604) may be isolated sufficiently from all other base stations in the network such that direct base-to-base measurement is not viable. In this case, a fixed mobile (606) is placed at a location in the handoff region between the isolated cell and another cell in the network. The fixed mobile (606) either performs measurements of base station pilots on command of the base and reports the timing information, or sends a burst transmission at a specified time and power level to be measured by the base stations.

In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station (5) receives a command which instructs the mobile station (5) as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indications of the presence of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both an origination base station (10) and a mobile station (5). The mobile station (5) tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station (5) coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station (5) when the mobile station (5) is tuned to the origination frequency.

The present invention is a method and apparatus for transmitting high rate data packet in a CDMA communication system. The transmission system transmits a first channel assignment message indicating the at least one additional channel that will be used to support the high rate data packet. The first channel assignment message is sent in advance of the onset of high rate data communications. In addition the present invention provides within the first frame of high rate data a duplicate channel assignment message. A remote receiver uses the channel assignment messages to initialize its demodulation elements (114 and 120) to receive the additional information carried on the at least one additional channel.

The channel condition to a subscriber unit (30a, 30b, 30c) is evaluated and the configuration of a high rate link in soft handoff is based on the channel condition. If a fading channel is detected the supplemental channels (52) of the high rate link are transmitted from multiple base stations (32a, 32b). If a non-fading channel is detected the supplemental channels of the high rate link are transmitted from a single base station. Parameters monitored to determine the channel condition include the pilot strength, pilot code offset and error rate.

Method for Processing Shared Sub-packets in a Communication System are disclosed. A communication system providing both voice and data services allows for a plurality of subscriber station to share a data sent in a unit of a forward traffic channel. To provide information required by the subscriber stations to determine that a unit of the forward traffic channel is shared, and to correctly decode the data, different control channel structures are described. Additionally, the control channel structures provides for more efficient signaling of code channel assignment.
