Method and apparatus for transmitting a signal at a predetermined level of reliability using retransmission of erroneously transmitted frames so as to minimize total transmission energy. The transmitting station evaluates the frame error rate (FER) as a function of energy. Next, the transmitting station determines a combination of initial transmission energies and retransmission energies that will provide the target level of reliability while minimizing the total transmission energy employed in the initial transmission and the retransmissions. The transmitting station transmits a frame with an initial transmission energy. Employing conventional feedback methods the transmitting station is alerted to the occurrence of frame errors at the receiving station. The transmitting station upon notification of a frame error retransmits the frame with an energy determined to minimize the total energy required to transmit the frame with a predetermined level of reliability.

A first and a second communication signal are time offset to prevent the first and second high transmit power regions from occurring simultaneously. Time shifting only a portion of the first and second communication signals is also taught. The first and second communication signals can also include respective first and second low transmit power regions. The time offset can be selected to align one of the first and second high transmit power regions with one of the first and second low transmit power regions. The total transmit power signal can be determined and the time offset can be selected to minimize a peak level of the total transmit power signal. The communication signals are separated into a plurality of portions and portions of the first and second communication signals are time offset to re-order the sequence of transmission of the plurality of portions.

Techniques are described for encoding an audio video stream that is transmitted over a network, for example a wireless or IP network, such that an entire frame of audio and an entire frame of video are transmitted simultaneously within a period required to render the audio video stream frames by an application in a receiver. Aspects of the techniques include receiving audio and video RTP streams and assigning an entire frame of RTP video data to communication channel packets that occupy the same period, or less, as the video frame rate. Also an entire frame of RTP audio data is assigned to communication channel packets that occupy the same period, or less, as the audio frame rate. The video and audio communication channel packets are transmitted simultaneously. Receiving and assigning RTP streams can be performed in a remote station, or a base station.

A method and apparatus for dynamically adjusting the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) threshold used to control signal transmission power in closed loop communication systems. The closed loop power control comprises an inner loop that provides up/down transmission power control commands to a transmitter based upon a comparison of the SIR for a received signal to the threshold SIR. The outer loop dynamically adjusts the threshold SIR using historic inner loop power control information. When it is detected that the inner loop is not acceptably performing power control, the target SIR is not changed, or may be increased or decreased more or less than 0.5 dB or 0.5 dB/99, respectively.

In one aspect, a list associated with a first station is generated or stored, the list comprising zero or more identifiers, each identifier identifying one of a plurality of second stations for sending a message to the first station. In another aspect, sets of lists for one or more first stations are generated or stored. In yet another aspect, the messages may be acknowledgements, rate control commands, or grants. In yet another aspect, messages comprising one or more identifiers in the list are generated. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of reduced overhead while managing grant, acknowledgment and rate control messaging for one or more remote stations.

In one embodiment, a periodic link quality message is transmitted on a gated channel, while continuous differential indicators are transmitted. Between quality messages, the differential indicators track the quality of the link. In one embodiment, a remote station includes a differential analyzer (212) to determine the change in successive channel quality measurements. The quality metric and the differential indicator are used for providing power control commands and rate control commands to teh base station. The quality metric and the differential indicator are transmitted at two different frequencies.

Methods and apparatus are presented for efficient broadcasting in wireless packet data systems. A single MAC_ID is used for broadcasting to a group of subscribers. By using the channel quality information of the group of subscribers (200), a base station determines the identity of the subscriber with the worst channel conditions (210). The timing and the transmission format of the multi-cast are then tailored so that the subscriber with the worst channel conditions is capable of recovering the transmission (220). If the timing and the transmission format is chosen in relation to subscriber with the worst channel conditions, it is probable that other subscribers will be able to recover the transmission as well. Hence, only a single MAC_ID need to be used to make a single broadcast, rather than sending multiple transmissions to multiple subscribers.
