A ferroelectric liquid crystal device, such as a display panel, has a plurality of pixels arranged as rows and columns in a passive matrix arrangement. Each pixel has a plurality of switching thresholds, for instance by having different regions (7, 8) of different thicknesses, so as to provide a plurality of grey levels. A voltage waveform is applied to each pixel for switching it to a desired grey level. A blanking pulse of a first polarity is applied to reset the pixel to a reset grey level. This is followed by a compensating pulse (20) of polarity opposite the first polarity, after which a waveform for selecting the desired grey level is provided. The effect of the compensating pulse (20) is to reduce the effect of τmin shift so as to provide a relatively wide driving window (13) to allow more reliable selection of an intermediate grey level.

At least one of the retarders 4 is a variable liquid crystal element whose optic axis is switchable so as to switch the device between a reflective state and a non-reflective state. In the non-reflective state, the total retardance of the retarders 3, 4, 5 between the polariser 1 and the mirror 2 is equal to an odd number of quarter wavelengths for a wavelength at or adjacent the middle of the visible spectrum.

Each pixel 7 is divided into first and second sub-pixels 8 and 9. The first sub-pixels 8 have parallel input and output polarisers 31, 34 whereas the second sub-pixels 9 have perpendicular input and output polarisers 31, 35. In order to address an intermediate grey level, the sub-pixels 8 and 9 are switched to the grey level. Variations in the grey levels of the sub-pixels 8 and 9, for instance caused by temperature variations, act in opposite directions so that the average grey level of the whole pixel 7 varies relatively little.

Chemical bonds are formed between the alignment layers 3 and 4 and the adjacent liquid crystal layers so that the liquid crystal layers are bonded to the alignment layers 3 and 4 in order to increase resistance to mechanical damage.

A patterned retarder is made by forming an alignment layer 2 on a substrate 1. The alignment layer 2 is rubbed in a first rubbing direction to provide a uniformly rubbed alignment layer 2a. The alignment layer 2a is then masked with a mask 5 and subjected to a second rubbing in a different direction to provide first regions A with a first alignment direction and second regions B with a different second alignment direction. The mask is removed and a layer of birefringent material 7 is formed on the alignment layer 6. The optic axis of the birefringent material of the layer 7 adopts the alignment of the underlying alignment layer 6 and the birefringent material is fixed to provide a patterned retarder layer 8.
