    摘要: A ferroelectric liquid crystal device, such as a display panel, has a plurality of pixels arranged as rows and columns in a passive matrix arrangement. Each pixel has a plurality of switching thresholds, for instance by having different regions (7, 8) of different thicknesses, so as to provide a plurality of grey levels. A voltage waveform is applied to each pixel for switching it to a desired grey level. A blanking pulse of a first polarity is applied to reset the pixel to a reset grey level. This is followed by a compensating pulse (20) of polarity opposite the first polarity, after which a waveform for selecting the desired grey level is provided. The effect of the compensating pulse (20) is to reduce the effect of τmin shift so as to provide a relatively wide driving window (13) to allow more reliable selection of an intermediate grey level.

Electrodes (104,106) apply a variable voltage across the liquid crystal layer (112) which has a twisted liquid crystal structure and is arranged for operation in surface switching mode with first and second regions (112a,112b) of the liquid crystal layer (112) adjacent the alignment layers (108,110) being mutually optically de-coupled so as to define, within the liquid crystal layer in use, a pair of separate, active optical retarders having mutually inclined optic axes.

    摘要: A twisted nematic liquid crystal device has a liquid crystal layer 20 between a pair of alignment layers 22 and 24. Glass plates 30 and 32 with electrodes 26 and 28 are disposed on opposite sides of the layers 20, 22 and 24. The alignment layers 22 and 24 have their alignment directions disposed mutually perpendicular and at ±45° with respect to adjacent linear polarisers 34 and 36. The pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules in a surface region 20a of the layer 20 adjacent the alignment layer 22 is different to that of liquid crystal molecules in a surface region 20c of the layer 20 adjacent the alignment layer 24 (Fig. 1).

This provides a limited difference in heating effect upon the array between a signal comprising a plurality of first waveforms (a, a, a, a etc.) and an alternating succession of first and second waveforms (a, b, a, b, a, b etc.).

    摘要: A liquid crystal display comprises a matrix of pixels 7, for instance formed at the intersections of data electrodes 1 and split strobe electrodes 2 and 3. Each pixel 7 is divided into first and second sub-pixels 8 and 9. The first sub-pixels 8 have parallel input and output polarisers 31, 34 whereas the second sub-pixels 9 have perpendicular input and output polarisers 31, 35. In order to address an intermediate grey level, the sub-pixels 8 and 9 are switched to the grey level. Variations in the grey levels of the sub-pixels 8 and 9, for instance caused by temperature variations, act in opposite directions so that the average grey level of the whole pixel 7 varies relatively little.
