Abstract: Optical systems that can produce digitally switchable optical power, optical pathlength, or both. It can apply to reconfigurable wide-angle optical systems that are compact, light-weight, and light-efficient. Architectures that increase pathlength can utilize polarization splitters to produce an additional round- trip of one or more optical cavities. Changing the focus distance of synthetic imagery in augmented/virtual reality systems is an example of an application where the techniques taught herein are particularly well suited. Passive double-cavity systems can be used to increase the throughput and decrease the stray-light/ghosts in polarization-based compact wide-angle lenses.

Abstract: A head-up display device (10) includes: a light source (12); a liquid crystal display device (13) that controls a transmittance of light from the light source (12) and displays an image on a display member (15); an illuminance sensor (18) that measures an environmental illuminance; and a control circuit (20) that uses a measurement result of the illuminance sensor (18) to control a brightness of the light source (12). The control circuit (20) controls the brightness of the light source (12) to prevent a border caused by a difference between a black brightness of a display area displayed on the display member (15) by the liquid crystal display device (13) and a black brightness of a background around the display area from being visually recognized.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display has a color filter layer and a thin-film transistor layer surrounding a layer of liquid crystal material. The display may have an active area with an array of display pixels. An inactive area may surround the active area. A black mask structure may be formed in the inactive area. A black matrix having a grid shape with rectangular openings may be formed in the active area. Red, green, and blue color filter elements may be formed in the rectangular openings. The black matrix may have a first layer that is formed from a grid of blue photoresist on a color filter substrate and a second layer that is formed from an aligned grid of black photoresist. In the inactive area, the black mask structure may be formed a layer of blue photoresist covered with a layer of black photoresist.

Abstract: A foldable electronic device module includes a glass cover element having a thickness from about 25 μm to about 200 μm, an elastic modulus from about 20 GPa to about 140 GPa and a puncture resistance of at least 1.5 kgf. The module further includes a stack with a thickness between about 100 μm and about 600 μm; and a first adhesive joining the stack to the cover element with a shear modulus between about 1 MPa and about 1 GPa. The stack further includes a panel, an electronic device, and a stack element affixed to the panel with a stack adhesive. Further, the device module is characterized by a tangential stress at a primary surface of the cover element of no greater than about 1000 MPa in tension upon bending the module to a radius from about 20 mm to about 2 mm.

Abstract: An optical coating has a siloxane polymer and noble metal particles. The coating has an index of refraction that is different for in-plane and out-of-plane. The coating has reverse optical dispersion within the visible wavelength range, and preferably a maximum absorption peak between 400-1000 nm wavelength range is greater than 700 nm. In one example the metal particles are noble metal nanorods having an average particle width of less than 400 nm.

Abstract: A composite article having a conductive layer on at least a portion of a flexible substrate. Electrical connectivity between various portions of the substrate can be obtained through this conductive layer. The conductive layer comprises a conductive surface, and there is a patterned layer on at least a portion of a first region of the conductive surface. The patterned layer comprises a conductive material having a surface roughness, and is in electrical contact with the conductive surface. An overcoat layer is present on at least a portion of the first region, such that the overcoat layer has a thickness less than the surface roughness, such that the conductive layer within the first region is covered by the overcoat layer, and such that at least a portion of the patterned layer substantially protrudes above the overcoat layer. The protruding portion permits electrical contact with the patterned layer, and via the conductive layer to other parts of the patterned layer and/or electrically conductive connectors to external electronic devices. Methods for forming the composite article are also disclosed. Methods of making such composite articles are also disclosed.

Abstract: Provided are: a polymer film of which film strength is difficult to be degraded and which has a lower reflectance, even when an additive is used, and an optical member, a polarizing member, and a display device employing the same. A low refractive index layer (the polymer film 13) includes a binder 132 including a product obtained by photopolymerizing a mixture of a side-chain-reactive photopolymerizable fluoropolymer and a siloxane compound. Further, the low refractive index layer 13 includes hollow silica particles 131 distributed in the binder 132. Further, the low refractive index layer 13 includes a product obtained by photopolymerizing a one-end reactive-type photopolymerizable fluoropolymer, and a modified silicone, which are mainly distributed in a surface side.
