A transmitting party sends a transfer request to a transfer network. Upon receiving the request, the transfer network allocates a service number (SN) to the transmitting party, if allowed by the current traffic load. The service number identifies the transmitting party for a predetermined period. Upon sending the service number to the communicating party which originated the transfer request, the transfer network preferably starts a timer which monitors the validity period of the service number. The transmitting party sends the destination address (DN) over the transfer network only once during the validity period of the service number. The transfer network associates the destination address (DN) to the service number allocated to the transmitting party. The transmitting party utilizes only the service number (SN) as an identity in the data packets transferred during the actual data transfer, and the transfer network routes the packet to the destination address associated with the service number.

The method comprises: a) transmission (28A) of a radio frequency measuring signal through an antenna line (27) towards the antenna; b) measurement (20) of the strength of a measuring signal component reflected back and passed along a predetermined measuring path; c) transmission (28B) of the measuring signal directly towards the receiver (210) to said measuring path; d) measurement (20) of the strength of the measuring signal transmitted directly along the measuring path. In the invention, the measurement is performed in a time slot allocated for a radio test loop, due to which it is possible to utilize frequencies actually used for traffic.

The invention relates to the organization of phase references in a data transfer system based upon the multiplexing of orthogonal frequency components, when transmissions in the said system are composed of relatively short symbol sequences. In accordance with the invention, in the first symbol (OS1) of the sequence differential phase-shift keying between elementary signals is carried out, based upon a phase reference (Ref) transmitted in one or several subfrequency bands (fc) and upon a phase shift chain propagated one subfrequency thereof at a time. In each subfrequency band in the subsequent symbols of the sequence phase-shift modulation refers to the elementary signal of the preceding symbol of the same subfrequency band. The invention may be applied with benefit to digital cellular network systems which employ the OFDM method.

The invention relates to a TDMA system and to a method of measuring adjacent base stations in a TDMA radio system. In the invention, dummy time slots (D) are inserted (III) to a TDMA signal sent by a base station (BS1). These dummy time slots offset the time slots of two carriers (BS1, BS2, BS3) with respect to each other, and therefore, a mobile station locked to a predetermined time slot on one carrier is able to measure and decode any time slot of an adjacent carrier within a longer period of time for a possible handover.

In a solution of the invention, the base station (10) orients the antenna lobe (14) in the vertical direction toward a terminal equipment (11-13) by changing the shape of the antenna lobe according to a timing advance. The nearer the terminal equipment (11-13) is to the base station (10), the more downward the antenna lobe (14) is oriented by turning the antenna lobe (14) primarily downward or by changing the shape of the antenna pattern (14). In this way, transmission power, and thereby interference, is reduced.
