The invention provides composites of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene reinforced with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene anisotropic reinforcement of high strength and modulus. The composites have superior mechanical properties related to non-filled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, including higher strength, impact strength, increased creep resistance, and improved modulus. The composites may be sterilized for biomedical use, using gamma radiation and other techniques. Further, the composites are resistant to the effet of body fluids and have lower creep rates so that they will provide implant life. The composites may be cross-linked by exposure to an acetylene environment. Also, the composites find use in other high strength, high compact applications such as sports equipment.

A method for the cleaning of roughened surface or porous-coated medical implants of all kinds. In the cleaning method, the roughened surface or porous-coated implant is subjected to blasting with particulate solids selected from the solids that are soluble in a biocompatible non-toxic solvent and solids that deliquesce, sublimate, or vaporize. The particulate solids must be sufficiently hard to provide effective impact for dislodging debris and loosely attached particles from implant surfaces. After blasting, the surface is optionally treated with ultrasonic vibration to further remove debris particulates. The impacted surfaces may also be rinsed with a biocompatible liquid. After cleaning, the surfaces may be passivated by immersion in conventional passivation solutions or a solution of non-aggressive oxyanions.

The invention provides an interpositional coupler for inserting between modules of a modular medical implant, wherein the modules are fabricated of compositions having different electrochemical potentials, to reduce or prevent the flow of a galvanic current and thereby reducing or preventing this contribution to corrosion of the prosthesis. The coupler may be of an insulative type comprising a zirconium/zirconium alloy core coated with blue-black zirconium oxide or nitride or any metal coated with amorphous diamond-like carbon. Alternatively, the coupler may be of a dual composition type with each of the compositions having essentially the same electrochemical potential as the module to which it couples.

There is disclosed a coated prosthesis that can be tailored to avoid the problem of bone resorption caused by stress shielding. The permanent, load-bearing skeletal replacement prosthesis (10) is coated or covered with a bioabsorbable polymer (30) at selected sites on its surface so that bone affixation is preferentially delayed at these covered sites and bone adjacent to uncoated areas are not stress shielded. Thus, resorption is avoided. When the bioabsorbable polymer is gradually absorbed away, bone affixation takes place on the exposed surfaces, as needed.
