The invention relates to a filter assembly for the vacuum filtration of aqueous media, in particular for the clarification and sterile filtration of aqueous media, preferably in litres, in laboratories and technical institutions. The inventive filter assembly (1) is equipped with a cartridge-type filter element (2) which is located in an encompassing, cylindrical housing (3) and separates off an inlet-side housing chamber (4). Said housing (3) is provided with an inlet (5) and an outlet (6). The filter element (2) consists of at least one tubular, pleated, hydrophilic, microporous membrane filter (8) which is fluid-tightly bordered at the front ends of a lower (9) and an upper end cap (10). The lower and upper end caps both have central openings (12, 13). The central opening (12) of the lower end cap (9) is connected to the outlet (6) of the housing (3), said outlet communicating with a filtrate container, and the central opening (13) of the upper end cap (10) is sealed off by a hydrophobic membrane (16).

The invention relates to a filtration unit which can be tested for integrity and has hydrophilic porous membranes (2) which at their edge regions are embedded in a fluid-tight manner by means of thermoplastic polymer material in anchoring elements (5), exhibit no edge water repellence and have greater filtration reliability and efficiency. It was found that filtration membranes of this type can be produced if hydrophilic porous membranes (2) are embedded at their edge regions by means of thermoplastic polymer material in a fluid-tight manner in anchoring elements (5) which at least in their edge regions and on at least one side are joined using heat and pressure to at least one porous flat structure (1) of thermoplastic polymer fibres. The claimed filtration units can be used in particular as filter candles in areas requiring a high level of filtration reliability, in particular in the pharmaceuticals and food industry, in the medical and laboratory field and in biotechnology.

A membrane filtration module is disclosed for use in fluid processing systems in which all active connections between the module and the fluid processing system are located only on one end of the module. A central flow conduit within the module directs all of the flow of liquid from one of the connections to the opposite end. In this manner, dead volume is essentially eliminated as the flow pattern causes the liquid to sweep all the volume within the module while still providing for easy installation and replacement by virtue of having all of the active connections on only one end.

The novel process is intended to modify these edge regions in such a way that, even after partial areas have been embedded in hydrophobic polymer material, they remain porous and hydrophilic over the whole of their effective area. The porous filter membranes are soaked in a solution of hydrophilising agent in the areas intended to be embedded so that the filter membranes are saturated with solution in those areas and the filter membranes thus treated are immediately washed and dried. Through this process the modified edge areas are a factor more hydrophilic than the untreated areas in the filter membranes, so that the areas of the membranes in the filter modules in direct contact with the securing components still remain adequately hydrophilic.

A method for producing a generally cylindrical filter medium and a filter element employing said medium is provided, where the filter medium is pleated and comprises a multi-layered structure of overlapping layers of membrane material. The filter element is particularly suited for separating immunoglobulin from a fluid, where the filter medium is first treated with an activating agent to from activated sites on the membrane surface. The thus treated membrane is then again treated with a protein, specific to a certain immunoglobulin. The fluid containing the immunoglobulin to be separated is then passed through the filter medium, whereby the immunoglobulin is separated cleanly at the activated sites.

The present disclosure relates to a vacuum filter that incorporates a large area pleated filter element having pleated hydrophilic membrane configured along slanting surface in pyramid shape and incorporated with in a filter housing that can be accommodated in neck of a filtrate container. The disclosed configuration reduces overall height of the filtering system improving its stability and reducing space requirement. Further, top portion of the filter housing is configured to receive either a feed cup for direct feeding of feed liquid by pouring in the cup or a fitting with tube that can be used to suck the feed from a feed solution container under action of a vacuum thus allowing universal use. In another embodiment, a single hydrophobic membrane is provided to avoid problems of low flow due to bubbles coming with the feed solution and also to allow restart of filtration without air lock.
