    Abstract: A device for inserting within an existing pipe to shatter the existing pipe and replace it with a new pipe comprises a front portion 1 and a separate rear portion 2. The rear portion 2 includes a hydraulically operated hammer which is kept in engagement with a part of the front portion 1 by means of tension applied to the rear portion 2 through cables 9, 9A. The hydraulic hammer causes the front portion 1 to vibrate relative to the rear portion 2, and this vibration causes shattering of the existing pipe, whilst the tension applied through the cables 9, 9A ensures that the device is driven through the existing pipe.

    Abstract: A device for removing irregularities in or enlarging a buried duct comprises a cylindrical housing corresponding approximately in diameter to the required diameter of the duct, an expandable shell comprising a plurality of tapered leaf members pivotally attached at their rear ends to the front of the housing, and remotely controllable drive means for moving the leaf members between contracted and expanded configurations. In operation, the apparatus is drawn through the duct with the leaf members in a contracted configuration in which they enter a portion of the duct of a diameter less than the required diameter. The drive means is operated to force the leaf members outwardly against the sides of the duct to expand the duct. The leaf members are then retracted and the apparatus is drawn forward. The apparatus is particularly intended for preparing damaged sewers prior to fitting an inner, lining pipe. By forming the shell in two sections, of which the nose is cylindrical in the contracted configuration and conical in the expanded configuration, the apparatus can move forward a distance approximately equal to the length of the leaf members with each expansion and contraction cycle, a continuous tension being applied to the chain drawing the device forward.

    Abstract: Apparatus for replacing underground pipe is described, including a resistance plate from which a pair of hydraulic cylinders extend perpendicularly parallel with each other. The cylinders operate cyclically with a pulling bridge having a cable gripper to provide a sequence of pulling strokes to a cable pulling a mole. The mole pulls a replacement pipe behind it through the old pipe, which has been burst, slit, or expanded by the mole. The resistance plate is provided with a slot, and the cylinders are positioned to allow the mole to be pulled substantially completely into the apparatus. A holding bridge is releasably mounted spanning the slot in the reaction plate to position a second cable gripper for holding the cable on the return stroke of the pulling bridge. The holding bridge may be removed at the end of the pulling operation to accommodate the mole. A robust, lightweight construction is described.
