The display includes a circuit board (16) having a display aperture (22), the circuit board disposed between the clear substrate and display panel, and assembled with the housing bezel such that a portion of the display can be viewed through a bezel aperture. Sensor electrodes (18) are disposed around the display aperture of the circuit board. A capacitive touch controller (32) generates an electric field (28) between sensor electrodes such that the electric field extends through and above the clear substrate. The controller can then detect a disturbance in the electric field above the clear substrate within and along a periphery of the bezel aperture.
