A method for playing tunes from a plurality of disks stored in a magazine in random order and without repeating any one tune. Three memories are provided. In the first there are recorded the identities of disks which have already been played, in the second, the identities of already-played tune S on each disk, and, in the third, an incremental count of the number of already-played tunes on each disk. The tunes are selected in terms of random numbers limited by the number of as-yet-unplayed disks derived from the data stored in the first memory.

A data playback system in which multiple disks are stored in a magazine. A first random number is generated to select one of the disks believed to be present in the magazine, or temporarily, on the turntable. The disk is fetched and it is determined if the disk exists. If not, it is eliminated from a catalog and the disk selection is reflected. Then a table of contents is read, either from the disk or, if used, from a previously stored random access memory. A second random number selects the piece of data on the selected disk for playing. If the table of contents is stored in random access memory, it is completed as the information becomes available. Then process is repeated for other randomly selected disks and pieces.

In an automated library, data cartridges, such as magnetic tape cartridges, are stored in storage cells and accessed by data storage drives. An accessor with a gripper transports cartridges between storage cells and storage drives. Cartridges are prioritized according to their relative importance. A processor manages the placement of the cartridges in cells by having higher priority cartridges stored closer to the front of multi-cartridge cells than cartridges with a lower priority. Cartridges with a higher priority may also be stored closer to a storage drive than cartridges with a lower priority. A pusher may be used to push cartridges towards the front of multi-cartridge cells with an empty position to enable the gripper to reach the front cartridge.
