A pair of switches 10a and 10b are disposed adjacent one another in a housing 11 which contains the highly insulating gas sulphur hexafluoride. In a closed position of each switch, a pivotable contact arm 15 engages fixed contact fingers 21 to permit the flow of load current therethrough. On opening of each switch, the contact arm 15 pivots away from the fingers 21 so that an arc is drawn therebetween, the arc subsequently being transferred from the fingers 21 to a tubular electrode 26. The arc current then flows through a field coil 22 connected in series with the electrode 26, such that a magnetic field is generated which causes the arc to rotate and become extinguished. The electrode 26 and field coil 22 are common to both switches 10a and 10b, the contact arms 15 of the latter being disposed respectively at opposite ends of the coil 22 and being isolated from each other by a transverse insulating member 29 disposed centrally in the electrode 26. The coil 22 is spirally wound so as to be symmetrical about a transverse plane through its centre, and therefore provides the same operating characteristics for each of the two switches 10a and 10b.

The gas-insulated switchgear (91-97) includes a fixed-side arc shield (13) in the form of a circular plate. The fixed-side arc shield (13) is made of an arc-resistant member and has an opening (13x) of a diameter larger than the outer diameter of the movable conductor (21), the opening (13x) being formed on the side of the fixed-side shield (12) facing the movable-side electrode. The fixed-side arc shield (13) is formed into a thin plate so that the fixed-side arc shield (13) causes an arc current to flow outward in a radial direction during contact parting of the fixed-side conducting contact (11) and the movable conductor (21) to generate magnetic flux on a surface thereof in a circumferential direction that produces a force acted on an arc in the direction of a central axis, thereby restricting the arc in the vicinity of the opening (13x).

In a load interrupter for gas-insulated switchgear systems equipped with an arc extinguishing device (7), a metal raceway (14) with edges that are drawn up at the inner and outer periphery thereof is associated with a nonferrous extinguishing coil (8) located on the side facing the arc foot. One end of the winding of the extinguishing coil is connected to the raceway and the other end is connected to the fixed contact of the load interrupter. The extinguishing coil is shielded outward up to a defined open arc running surface (25) at the raceway by the winding support and by an inner and an outer jacket (20, 22), each of which are made of a non-conducting material. The simple and compact arc extinguishing device can be disposed near the fixed contact of the interrupter and guarantees a fast commuting of the arc to the raceway and also guarantees the reliable, quick extinguishing of the arc.

The invention relates to a blow-out coil for gas-insulated load-break switches whose phases have one fixed and one mobile contact, comprising a winding body supporting a single- or multi-layer winding connected to a fixed contact potential, and a field-control electrode. According to the invention the blow-out coil is configured in such a way that it can be used at lower cost and almost universally in load-break switches or switches requiring a load switching capacity. To this end the turn (9; 24) of the winding (6; 19) facing the contacts (2/4; 2a/4a; 15/25) is uninsulated, the end section (10; 23) of said turn (9; 24) is pointed towards the fixed-contact-side base of the electric arc and the free end of the end section (10; 23) is positioned at a minimum distance to said base and to the mobile contact (4; 4a; 25) which can be moved past said end.
