    摘要: In a contacts closed position of the switchgear a pair of contact arms (6 and 10), which are electrically connected to respective conductors (3 and 4), engage the ends of a main contact bar (17) such that current flow occurs through the switchgear by way of conductor (3), contact arm (6), contact bar (17), contact arm (10) and conductor (4). Upon movement of the contact bar (17) in the direction of arrow (31 the contact bar disengages from the contact arms (6 and 10), and an arc is drawn between each end portion (14 and 16) of the contact arms and a respective arcing electrode (23A, 23B). A common field coil (27) has its ends electrically connected to the arcing electrodes respectively, such that the arcing current flows through the field coil (27) to create a magnetic field which causesthe arcs to rotate and become extinguished an insulating barrier (24) separates the electrodes (23A and 23B) to prevent the arc from being transferred directly across the contact arms (6 and 10).

    摘要: in a contacts closed position of a circuit breaker, a main body portion (224) of a contact arm (208) engages a main contact (218). Upon movement of the contacts towards an open position, an end portion (225) of the contact arm (208) moves into engagement with a tubular arcing electrode (221) before the main body portion (224) disengages from the main contact (218). Subsequently, the end portion (225) disengages from the arcing electrode (221) so that an arc is drawn therebetween, and the arcing current flows through a field coil (223) creating a magnetic field which causes the arc to rotate and become extinguished. In the contacts open position of the circuit breaker, the end portion (225) lies along the axis of the field coil (223). In an alternative construction, the end portion of the contact arm engages the arcing electrode when the contacts are in their closed position, and remains in such engagement for some time after the main body portion has disengaged from the main contact.

    摘要: On opening of a circuit breaker, an end portion 19 of a pivotable contact arm 12 disengages from fixed contacts 7 such that an arc is drawn therebetween radially across the pole face of a field coil 9, the end portion 19 moving transversely to the field coil axis. The arc then transfers from the contacts 7 to a tubular electrode 24 thereby bringing the field coil 9 into circuit so that a magnetic field is generated which causes the arc to rotate and become extinguished. In the fully-open position of the circuit breaker, the end portion 19 lies along the field coil axis. The whole assembly is disposed in a housing 2 which contains the highly insulating gas sulphur hexafluoride. A single field coil and electrode can be shared between two such constructions. Arrangements are also disclosed (Figures 11 to 14) in which the initial arc is drawn directly between the contact arm 12 and the electrode 24.

    摘要: A pair of switches 10a and 10b are disposed adjacent one another in a housing 11 which contains the highly insulating gas sulphur hexafluoride. In a closed position of each switch, a pivotable contact arm 15 engages fixed contact fingers 21 to permit the flow of load current therethrough. On opening of each switch, the contact arm 15 pivots away from the fingers 21 so that an arc is drawn therebetween, the arc subsequently being transferred from the fingers 21 to a tubular electrode 26. The arc current then flows through a field coil 22 connected in series with the electrode 26, such that a magnetic field is generated which causes the arc to rotate and become extinguished. The electrode 26 and field coil 22 are common to both switches 10a and 10b, the contact arms 15 of the latter being disposed respectively at opposite ends of the coil 22 and being isolated from each other by a transverse insulating member 29 disposed centrally in the electrode 26. The coil 22 is spirally wound so as to be symmetrical about a transverse plane through its centre, and therefore provides the same operating characteristics for each of the two switches 10a and 10b.
