The present invention provides a broadband waveguide mixer, comprising: a waveguide having a substantially v-shaped groove in its inner surface; a broadband antenna coupling in the V-groove; and mixing means for mixing signals received by the broadband antenna. The present invention further provides a high frequency electromagnetic wave receiver comprising the aforesaid broadband waveguide mixer. The broadband waveguide mixer and the high frequency electromagnetic wave receiver have the advantages of broad single mode operating frequency band, lower loss, lower noise, and they can be easily produced and assembled to lower cost.

The following description concerns a subharmonic frequency converter for applications to millimetric radio waves. The circuit structure comprises a diplexer filter realized in thin film on alumina layer set up by a pass-band section for an incoming local oscillator signal LO/2 with subharmonic frequency, and a low pass section for a signal with intermediate frequency IF. The point common to both sections is connected to a gate of a low pass filter LPS realized in microstrip on a quartz layer letting making pass the subharmonic and blocking the fundamental. The other gate of the LPS filter is connected to a head of a pair of mixer diodes in GaAs put in antiparallel on the same quartz layer; the other head of the pair is connected to ground. The diodes are at the centre of a rectangular cavity closed on one side by a short-circuit plate and on the opposite communicating with a rectangular waveguide carrying a radiofrequency signal RF.

The following description regards a frequency converter (1) for applications on millimetric radio waves. The circuit structure comprises a diplexer filter realized in thin film on an alumina layer connected to a balun set up by a quartz plate on which two mixing diodes in GaAs have been mounted, placed in the centre of a rectangular cavity (2) closed on one side by a short circuit plate and on the opposite side communicating with a rectangular waveguide (4) transporting a radio frequency signal RF. On the upper side of the plate three parallel metallic bands have been put in the sense of the width of the cavity, between the bands the diodes are connected in series. The most external bands are welded to the walls of the cavity (2), the central one on the other hand is connected to the point common to both sections of the diplexing filter by means of a metallic strap in the air welded to a microstrip. The ports of the local oscillator signals LO and an intermediate frequency IF are set up by two connected coaxial connectors (7, 8) by means of glass-bead (5, 6) to respective microstrips of the diplexer filter.

A microwave mixer (10) is formed of three orthogonally oriented waveguides (12, 14, 16), each having a rectangular cross-section defined by a pair of opposed broad walls (46) and a pair of opposed sidewalls (48) wherein the ratio of cross-sectional dimensions typically is 2:1. The mixer includes an input coupling probe (22), a mixing region (30), and an output filter (24) disposed serially along a first of the waveguides. A second of the waveguides applies a reference LO signal via the probe to the mixing region, the mixing region employed in the preferred embodiment of the invention. A section of dielectric board (32) serves to support the diodes of the mixing region, components of the filter (24), and the probe in the first waveguide. The third waveguide applies an RF input signal to the mixing region via an input port (16) in a side of the first waveguide, and via an impedance matching taper (58) and a waveguide section of reduced height (62) which impedes egress of both an IF and an image signal produced in the mixing region by interaction of the LO and the RF signals. The filter (24) is located at the mixer IF output port (34) for reflecting an image-frequency signal back to the diodes of the mixing region for further interaction with the LO signal to generate additional IF signal in phase with the originally produced IF signal for additional power and a significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio.

There is described an image rejection frequency converter comprising essentially a balun (DIV) used as a power divider for coupling a local oscillator signal to the ends of two frequency mixers (MIX1, MIX2). Said mixers (MIX1, MIX2) have ports to which arrive or from which come out intermediate radiofrequency signals (Fig. 1). The invention consists principally of integration of the power divider (DIV) and the mixers (MIX1, MIX2) in a planar structure based on a new concept provided in microstrip and in coplanar line.

A compact multi-layer flat antenna structure incorporating a low noise block down-converter on the power divider network layer of the antenna. RF circuit losses are reduced, and the antenna/receiver combination is made more compact, for flush mounting. The antenna/receiver combination finds particular utility in direct broadcast satellite (DBS) applications for single or dual orthogonal polarizations. The connection between the antenna and receiver may be implemented in stripline/ coplanar waveguide, or other known technologies such as microstrip, slotline, and finline.
