The even harmonic mixer includes: a transducer in which a conductor of a microstrip line is connected to a ground plane of a waveguide, for transducing an RF signal transmitted in a waveguide mode into a transmission mode of the microstrip line; an anti-parallel diode pair which is cascade-connected to a microstrip line side of the transducer, and formed on a semiconductor substrate; a branching circuit for branching an LO signal and an IF signal; an open-end stub which is disposed between the transducer and the anti-parallel diode pair, and has a line length of about 1/2 wavelength at an RF signal frequency; and an open-end stub which is disposed between the anti-parallel diode pair and the branching circuit, and has a line length of about 1/4 wavelength at the RF signal frequency.

The mixer branches (12a, 12b) are connected to the oscillator input port (LO) and to the radio frequency input port (RF) in such a manner that intermediate signals (IF1, IF2), which are produced in these mixer branches (12a, 12b) and correspond to a Doppler shift between the oscillator signal and the radio frequency signal, are processed to the overall output signal. Each mixer branch (12a, 12b) includes a rectifier circuit having a diode (18a, 18b; 118a, 118b), a load resistor (22a, 22b), a decoupling capacitor (24a, 24b), a series resistor (14a, 14b) and a series capacitance (16a, 16b).

A double-balanced monolithic microwave integrated circuit mixer is fabricated on a GaHs substrate with a local oscillator microstrip balun formed thereon. A crossover diode ring (44) is also formed upon the substrate. The radio frequency microstrip balun and the local oscillator microstrip balun provide enhanced electrical isolation between a radio frequency port (24) and a local oscillator port (74), enhanced spurious response suppression, and enhanced local oscillator noise rejection in only 0.021' x 0.048' of circuit area.

Two baluns (56, 64), a quarter-wave transmission line (74) and a diode quad (72) are combined on a chip to form an MMIC mixer, and a pair of mixers are combined with 90 degree and 180 degree splitters to provide circuits with superior rejection of specific spurious signals as well as reduced RF and LO leakage. The two baluns (56, 64) comprise mini-microstrip and mini-coplanar transmission lines formed on the chip substrate with two metal layers. Together with a ground plane on the underside of the substrate, the lines are connected to form Marchand baluns (56, 64).

A double-double-balanced mixer includes first and second radio frequency baluns and first and second local oscillator baluns formed on a dielectric substrate and connected to two diode rings. An intermediate frequency port is also connected to two diode rings. The particular dimensions of the stripline mixer are carefully selected to provide high dynamic range, strong suppression of intermodulation products, low conversion loss, and low local oscillator input power. The specific design dimensions of the mixer are selected contrary to conventional mixer design principle. For example, the local oscillator and radio frequency balun microstrips are designed to have a length which is considerably less than one-quarter wavelength of the LO and RF frequencies.
