In a flat plate antenna, insertion loss is reduced significantly by providing an extensive waveguide structure at the back of the ground plane (10) of the antenna. Depending on antenna size, the waveguide may feed the antenna at one or a plurality of points. According to a preferred embodiment, the transition from waveguide to stripline is made via a coaxial connection (20), with a quarter-wave transformation, including mode suppression walls (30) to direct the energy more efficiently. Alternatively, a direct waveguide to stripline transition may be provided. The technique has wide applicability to a number of antenna designs, including single- and dual-polarization structures, and linear and circular polarization operation.

A radio position determination and message transfer system is implemented using a pair of satellites in geostationary orbit for relaying interrogation and reply signals between a ground station and a user-carried transceiver. The user position is calculated based on the arrival times of reply signals received at the ground station via the two satellite, the known transmission time of the interrogation signal from the ground station, and the user's elevation on the surface of the earth. The elevation is derived from a stored terrain map providing local terrain elevations at a plurality of points on the earth's surface. The stored terrain map allows accurate position fixes to be obtained for surface users regardless of the deviation of the local terrain from the spherical or ellipsoidal model of the earth's surface.

A plurality of terrestrial interface modules (TIMs) (15a, 15b....15n) are multiplexed and demultiplexed with common equipment through the use of mapping RAMs contained in each TIM. The common equipment provides identical addresses to each of the mapping RAMs in the TIMs. The mapping RAMs in each TIM determine whether incoming or outgoing data is to be written into or read from the associated TIM, and generate an address for the data so written into or read from the TIM. A mapping RAM is further provided in the common equipment to allow for burst-to-burst selection of data. A stream of data in standard PCM format is written into sequential locations of buffer memories, and subsequently read out of the memories in a different order so as to effect a reorganization of the PCM data. The reorganization of data packs all the bits associated with a single channel into a single contiguous block of time for an entire frame of data.

An adaptive equalizer performs equalization at IF, demodulates the input signal and then generates the equalization coefficients at baseband from the demodulated data. Coefficient updating can be done on a non-real time basis and coefficients for individual bursts stored in a coefficient memory for retrieval when the same burst occurs in the next frame, thus obtaining a pseudo-continuous equalization for each burst. In one embodiment, the error signal is derived from demodulated equalized data and correlated with demodulated unequalized data to generate the correlation coefficients, and individual error signals from each channel can be combined into a single composite error signal for correlation purposes.

In a secure communications system, a key number which is changed periodically, e.g. monthly, and a random number from a random number generator are combined and used as a seed to reset a PN sequence generator, with the output of the generator being used to control encryption of transmission data in a signal processor. The key is also provided to a first encipherer to encipher the random number for transmission with the encrypted data. At the receiver, the key is provided on common to a decipherer for deciphering the random number and a PN sequence generator which is periodically reset by the combination of the key and random number in the same manner as in the transmitter. The PN sequence is then used to decrypt the information. User identification codes are stored in the transmitter and are used to encipher the key, with each employing its ID code to decipher the key. The user ID codes are known only to the system operator, so that not even a particular user can know the key.

A modular arrangement of directional RF filters provides frequency multiplexing of signal sources at earth stations which are transmitting on two orthogonal polarizations. Each of the modules consist of a pair of 3dB hybrid couplers coupled to each other through identical bandpass filters such that a signal applied to one of two input ports is outputed exclusively through an associated one of two output ports. The passbands of each of the modules are mutually exclusive. The output ports of each module are coupled to an output port of two adjacent modules, and two main outputs are taken from the two outer modules. The signals from the two main outputs are applied to two antennas having mutually orthogonal polarizations. The present invention may also be used as a demultiplexing receiver.

La présente invention vise à réduire le nombre de composants nécessaires pour minimiser la distorsion d'intermodulation à l'intérieur de la large bande de fréquence de transmission utilisée par un système répéteur de télécommunications par satellite. En particulier, au moins une cavité de mode TM010 (32) est raccordée en cascade à une pluralité de cavités de mode TE113 (33) pour former un filtre à bande passante étroite et à bande coupée large permettant de recevoir et d'émettre des signaux de canal en direction du collecteur multiplexeur (36) d'un répéteur de satellite. Le filtre multiplexeur ainsi réalisé permet d'obtenir la réponse à bande passante étroite nécessaire dans les transmissions par faisceaux hertziens, tout en éliminant les fréquences de résonance parasites normalement éliminées par des composants filtrants supplémentaires. Ainsi, les aspects dimensionnels et pondéraux du système satellitaire sont améliorés sans perte de performances.
