In order to prevent content data from being illegally recorded or reproduced, information for detecting that the content data is illegally distributed or recorded is added to watermark information or other information. Two sets of WM (watermark) data, a WM1 data set and a WM2 data set are prepared. For the WM1 data, data representing that the content data is package media data or distribution data, SCMS information, data representing that the content data is recorded in a disk or a semiconductor memory, and data representing the type of disk or semiconductor memory are set. For the WM2 data, the distribution time or the year and date is set as time information representing time when the content data is recorded. According to the WM1 or WM2 data, a data reproducing device (1) controls reproduction most suitably as copyright holder' s intention.

The disclosure describes systems for creating and authenticating printed objects (45, 46) using authentication and copy detection watermarks. For example, one verification system includes a watermark decoder (50) and a verification module (64, 66, 68, 70). The watermark decoder (50) detects a copy detection watermark in a printed object (45, 46) to determine whether the printed object has been reproduced. The verification module (64, 66, 68, 70) processes a message decoded from an authentication watermark on the printed object to authenticate the printed object or bearer of the printed object. The authentication and copy detection watermarks may be implemented as the same or different watermarks. For example, the authentication and copy detection watermarks may be separate watermarks embedded in an image that is printed on the object. The authentication watermark, in some applications, includes an identifier that links the object to a database entry with related information about the object.

The documents can be provided with overt or subliminal calibration patterns. When a document incorporating such a pattern is scanned (e.g. by a photocopier), the pattern facilitates detection of the encoded information notwithstanding possible sealing or rotation of the scan data. The calibration pattern can serve as a carrier for the watermark information, or the watermark can be encoded independently. In one embodiment, the watermark and the calibration pattern are formed on the document by an intaglio process, with or without ink. A photocopier responsive to such markings can take predetermined action if reproduction of a security document is attempted. A passport processing station responsive to such markings can use the decoded binary data to access a database having information concerning the passport holder. Some such apparatuses detect both the watermark data and the presence of a visible structure characteristic of a security document (e.g., a printed seal of the document's issuer).

Erfindungsgemäß wird ausgehend von einer vorher festgelegten Anzahl von Kopien und von einer maximalen Zahl von kooperierenden Angreifern zum Dokument für jede Kopie eine Stellen oder ein Bereiche für den digitalen Fingerabdruck des Kunden definiert. Alle im Rahmen des Dokuments definierten Stellen und Bereiche für die digitalen Fingerabdrücke unterliegen in ihrer Gesamtheit einem in sich geschlossenen endlichen geometrischen Ordnungssystem, in dem an definierten Stellen oder Bereichen Überschneidungen der digitalen Fingerabdrücke erfolgen. Anhand der Auswertung der durch die Angreifer nicht gefundenen Schnittstellen können die an der Manipulation beteiligten Angreifer eindeutig ermittelt werden.
