Video signal processing apparatus is provided for use with a video camera (13) having a line scanning line period during which useful video information is provided and a flyback period during which an optical black signal level. Replacement black signal information that is a function of the optical black signal level is inserted (17) into a portion of the flyback period. When the camera (13) is of the type having a complementary colour matrix filter which produces odd and even raster scan lines of image pick-up signals with different modulation components, contour correction is provided. Modulation components in a scan line of image pick-up signals caused by the patterns of filter elements included in the matrix are removed (56), thereby producing an averaged scan line of image signals from which is extracted a signal component that is uncorrelated from one line to the next. Prior to such extraction, that portion of an averaged scan line of image signals which exceeds a predetermined level that is less than the lowest average level of a scan line of image signals which would saturate video processing circuitry (67, 69, 70) is clipped (61, 63, 65). The extracted, uncorrelated signal component is combined (73) with an averaged scan line of image signals to produce a contour-emphasized luminance signal.

The present invention relates to a satellite television broadcasting receiver which receives waves from a satellite, selects a broadcasting office and obtains an FM demodulated video signal by passing a selected signal through the band-pass filter (6). In this satellite television broadcasting receiver, the video signal superposed with a large energy dispersion signal is inputted to the first clamping circuit (8) at a low level, to eliminate the energy dispersion signal. Thus, a room is provided in the dynamic range of the amplifier (9) at the later stage and the DG and DP of the amplifier (11) at the later stage are maintained at a satisfactory level by the second clamping circuit (10). As a result, even in the case of a satellite television broadcasting in which the level of the energy dispersion signal superposed on the video signal is large, distortion which occurs due to the nonlinearity of the amplifier can be reduced substantially so that the image can be reproduced on the screen in a satisfactory condition without an interference of flickering.

A cathode ray tube driver circuit includes a video amplifier which is AC coupled to the video input and includes a DC reinsertion circuit (25,44) which clamps the DC bias at a level related to the composite video level immediately following the sync pulse. The DC reinsertion is clamped for each scanning line at the CRT black level. The video amplifier also includes a blanking circuit (35) which turns the tube off during the retrace interval. The driver circuit can drive the tuns of a three-colour tube in a manner that will simultaneously control their operation for the colour display and yet take into account manufacturing tolerances in individual characteristics of the guns.

The present invention provides a direct current restorer applied to a pedestal clamp circuit of a television receiver or the like, in which an input video signal is compared with a pedestal level setting reference signal for every pedestal period, and, based on difference between the pedestal level of the input video signal and the level of the reference signal, the direct current level of the input video signal is shifted. In this direct current restorer, a direct current according to the level variation of the reference signal may be superposed on the input video signal so that the direct current level of the input video signal is corrected according to the level variation of the reference signal. Accordingly, when adjusting the pedestal level or achieving a liquid crystal display in which the polarity of the input video signal is periodically inverted, a direct current according to the level variation of the reference signal may be superposed on the input video signal. Thus, the pedestal level of the input video signal may quickly follow the level variation of the reference signal and may be controlled to the level of the reference signal with no influence exerted onto the comparison in level of the input video signal with the reference signal. Accordingly, when this direct current restorer is applied to, for example, a drive circuit for a liquid crystal panel such as a liquid crystal television receiver or the like in which the input video signal is periodically changed in polarity, a stable direct current restoration may be achieved.
