A process for inducing pre-tilt in alignment of a liquid crystal medium comprising exposing at least one optical alignment layer, comprising anisotropically absorbing molecules and hydrophobic moieties, to polarized light; the polarized light having a wavelength within the absorption band of said anisotropically absorbing molecules; wherein the exposed anisotropically absorbing molecules induce alignment of the liquid crystal medium at an angle + and - υ with respect to the direction of the polarization of the incident light beam and along the surface of the optical alignment layer, and induce a pre-tilt at an angle Ζ with respect to the surface of the optical alignment layer and applying a liquid crystal medium to said optical alignment layer, is described. The invention also is directed to liquid crystal display elements made by the process of the invention and to novel polyimide compositions that are useful as optical alignment layers in the invention.

An apparatus and method for safing and arming a projectile is disclosed. The apparatus utilizes an out of line rotor configuration where the detonator is mounted in the rotor. In the safe position, the detonator is out of line with an explosive lead. The rotor is locked out of line with two independent locks. One lock is removed at gun launch setback and the second lock is removed at the time of arming, when a preselected environment is detected by electronics and safe separation is assured. The first lock includes a spring and a weight where the weight is biased in a position to prevent the rotor from moving to an in line position. At setback, the g-forces act on the weight to overcome the spring and the weight is removed from the path of the rotor. Once the selected environment is sensed and safe separation is established the electronic input to arming is permitted. A primer is ignited to remove the second lock shear tab and rotate the rotor to the armed position where the detonator is aligned with the explosive lead. A firing circuit can then be employed to ignite the detonator causing propagation of hot gases and particles to the explosive lead which ignites the warhead explosive/propellent of the projectile.

The invention also comprises a method for removing material from a substrate through application of the abrasive fluid of the invention comprising the steps of projecting the fluid composition onto the substrate. Reactive materials such as explosives, propellants, flammables, combustibles and the like may be cut using the composition of the invention.

Une seule bande magnétique contenant des octets de données D selon l'état actuel de la technique est divisée en sous-pistes W, contenant chacune des octets de données D/W. Le magnétophone est capable d'enregistrer à une pleine vitesse présélectionnée et à des fractions intégrales de cette vitesse. Lorsque l'enregistrement est effectué à une vitesse inférieure à la pleine vitesse, les sous-pistes W qui constituent une piste sont décalées dans le sens longitudinal de manière que la zone couverte par les sous-pistes W soit approximativement identique à la zone d'une seule piste selon l'état actuel de la technique, enregistrée à pleine vitesse. A cased telescoped ammunition in which a rigid liner (34) fills the gap between the control tube (16) and the metering tube (22). The liner (34) comprises an energetic material which transfers the ignition stimulus from the control tube propellant (18) to the main propellant (40). Energetic materials in the liner (34) can be modified to increase the ignition stimulus for proper cold round performance or decrease ignition stimulus for an improved timed sequencing of the round's performance. Both double-based and single-based energetic materials may be used.

A projectile base plug (10) with enhanced separation capability has a body (18) which fits into an end of a spinning projectile casing (14) and drag-producing vanes (20) being spaced apart about the circumference of the object and pivotally mounted thereto for movement between stowed and deployed positions. Upon ejection of the base plug (10) from the projectile casing (14), the vanes (20) are released from stowed positions within the aerodynamic outline of the base plug (10) where they have no substantial effect on the flight of the projectile (12), to deployed positions by centrifugal force generated by the spinning body where they project into the air stream and produce drag on the ejected base plug (10).
