In a method of joining webs, the webs 48, 48b are overlapped and cut together, a cut-off portion (48a or 48d) is removed from the region of the cut, and adhesive material (119) is applied to marginal portions of the webs adjacent the cut to effect the join. The webs are stationary and a splicing head is moved across the webs carrying a cutter (126) and tape-applying means (125, 138). A plough 181 removes the cut-off portion. An effective butt join is formed and the webs may first be brought to a predetermined relative position using register marks 74. Adhesive material may be applied to both sides of the webs and the splicing head may be part of a splicing assembly between a turret and a festoon accumulator to allow uninterrupted running of the web.

The subsequent tubular foil (6) is first cut thereby forming opposing foil parts. These parts are then folded forming a folding line in the subsequent tubular foil, such that they remain in an opened position. The subsequent tubular foil having the folded opposing parts is stored on a reel, wherein the opposing parts are held in the opened position by movable holding members (23). At a later stage, the current tubular foil can be brought in between the foil parts. By moving the holding members, the begin section of the subsequent foil can be attached to the end section of the current foil, thereby splicing both foils.

According to said method, the strip-type initial and end sections (3, 4) respectively have two superimposed outer lateral surfaces (10, 11, 15, 16) that respectively turn into two inner, inwardly folded, lateral surfaces (17, 18, 19, 20) in the edge regions thereof, said lateral surfaces forming an inner folding axis (S, T). According to the invention, a tongue (7, 27) is formed by cutting the two outer edge regions of the initial or end sections (3, 4), said tongue being connected to the opposite section (3, 4) in a tensile-proof manner. The initial section (3) overlaps the end section (4).
