An emergency drop system allows ballasted advertising banner (14) if disconnected from an aircraft to descend slowly to the ground. Banner (14) is suspended below an aircraft by line (4) held taut by ballasted container (24). Static line (26) attached to the aircraft will, on release of loop (6) of line (4) from the aircraft, pull on closures (12) and release parachute (8) from its container (10). Drag of parachute (8) in the slipstream will slow the fall of banner (14) and also pull on lanyard (20) so that it activates 3-ring release (22) causing container (24) to invert and disperse the ballast.

An aerial delivery system 10 is provided. The system is for carrying cargo 3 from an aircraft 1 to ground. The aerial delivery system comprises: a platform 11 for supporting the cargo; a main parachute 13 for carrying the platform when the platform has exited the aircraft and is airborne and the main parachute is deployed; a main parachute deployment line 15 to deploy the main parachute, an extraction parachute 16 coupled to the platform and arranged for generating a drag force and exerting the drag force on the platform; and a coupling arrangement 120 switchable from an open configuration in which the main parachute deployment line is uncoupled from the extraction parachute, and a closed configuration in which the main parachute deployment line is coupled to the extraction parachute. The aerial delivery system is configured such that, when the extraction parachute exerts the drag force on the platform, the coupling arrangement is initially in the open configuration until the coupling arrangement is switched to the closed configuration to couple the main parachute deployment line to the extraction parachute.

A method (400) for an airborne payload system (100) includes receiving (410), from a sensor (140) on a payload line (130), information about the payload line (130), wherein the payload line (130) comprises a first end (130a) wound about a main reel (210) of a winch system (120) and a second end (130b) configured to couple to a payload (160). The method further includes providing instructions (420), based on the received information, to the unmanned aircraft (110) and the winch system (120) in order to control a position of the second end (130b) of the payload line (130).

Described and claimed is a system for detaching an extractable unit (3, 5, 7) from an extraction unit (9, 11, 13) pulling the extractable unit in an extraction direction out of a cargo bay of an aerospace vehicle for aerial delivery. The system comprises a detachment unit (33, 35, 37) which is connectable to an extractable unit and which is operable for controllably detaching an extraction unit from the extractable unit, a guiding system (23) and a release unit (27, 29, 31). The release unit is movably attached to the guiding system and physically connected (39) to the detachment unit such that the release unit is movable with an extractable unit to which the detachment unit has been connected in the extraction direction along the guiding system. The release unit is controllable to operate the detachment unit to which the release unit is connected for detaching an extraction unit from the extractable unit. Further, a method for detaching an extractable unit from an extraction unit is claimed and described.

A parafoil for operation at high altitudes, in low density air, or at low airspeeds, and methods for opening same. Some versions of the parafoil comprise flexible members connected to the parafoil canopy. When the parafoil canopy is in a stowed configuration, the members are deformed, storing elastic energy. When the canopy is released from its stowed configuration, the members spring back to their undeformed shapes, thereby opening or assisting with opening the canopy. The flexible member may also be attached to a base structure, which is attached to the payload. The members may comprise rods or hollow tubes that can be flexed using a fulcrum near the base structure, or a spacer plate, so that the ends connected to the canopy are restrained by a parachute bag containing the stowed or packed canopy. The parachute bag can be opened prior to or during detachment of the parafoil from the flight vehicle.
