A camless valve assembly for an internal combustion engine which utilizes a plurality of three position control valves to open and close the intake and exhaust valves of the assembly. Each valve is coupled to a plurality of hydraulically driven pins that move the valve between the open and closed positions. The flow of fluid to the pins is controlled by the three position digitally latched solenoid actuated control valves that can be switched between a first position, a second position and a neutral position. When a control valve is in the first position the fluid flows into the pins and moves the valve. When the control valve is in the second position the fluid can flow away from the pins to allow the valve to move back to the original position. When the control valve is in the neutral position the fluid does not flow so that the valve cannot move. The control valve can be switched by a controller that can move and maintain a valve at any position during any cycle of the engine.

A control apparatus for a solenoid-operated valve that functions as an intake or exhaust valve of an internal combustion engine includes a lower spring (30) biasing a valve body (14) of the valve in a valve closing direction and upper and lower coils (42, 46) disposed above and below an armature (36) for generating electromagnetic forces to move the valve body (14) in the valve closing and valve opening directions. After a request for closing of the valve body (14) is made, command currents are supplied to the upper and lower coils (42, 46) in suitable timing to increase the speed at which the valve body (14) is seated against a valve seat (20). As the valve body (14) rotates about its axis due to the action of the lower spring (30) in the course of moving toward the valve seat (20), it is possible to crush and remove carbon between the valve body (14) and the valve seat (20) without causing local wear of the valve body (14).

A valve rotating apparatus of an internal-combustion engine comprises: a valve 1 biased in the closing direction by a coil spring 5; a valve lifter 4 disposed on an engine head in such manner as to be vertically movable together with the valve 1; a cam 9 formed on a cam shaft 10 for directly driving the valve 1 through the valve lifter 4; and a thrust rolling bearing 2 disposed in a retainer 6 of the coil spring 5, the thrust rolling bearing 2 comprising an upper washer 21, a lower washer 22 and balls 20 held by a cage 23 between the upper and lower washers. In the thrust rolling bearing 2, the cage 23 is provided at the circumference thereof with a plurality of pockets at regular spatial intervals, a plurality of balls 20 being housed in each pocket. In the thrust rolling bearing 2, each of the upper and lower washers is provided at the inner or outer periphery thereof with an axially extending cylindrical portion. In the thrust rolling bearing 2, the upper washer 21 has the degree of freedom for movement in all directions including X and Y directions, within the same plane.

The arrangement comprises means (7, 14) for introducing pressurized charge from an air intake duct (10) of the engine air into the chamber (5) between the thrust means (6, 19) and the inner end of the chamber (5) for assisting in keeping the valve (1) closed. The invention also concerns a cylinder head (9).
