L'ouverture de la soupape de contrôle laisse l'eau (et parfois de l'air sous pression) s'échapper de la chambre (26) ce qui modifie l'équilibre des pressions et le corps de soupape principale se soulève pour libérer toute la masse d'eau. Ce flux peut contribuer à maintenir ce corps de soupape (20) soulevé et une zone de dépression située dans le passage de la masse d'eau permet éventuellement de garder la chambre propre par aspiration. Les soupapes se referment quand la décharge cesse et l'eau de remplissage pénètre dans la chambre (26) par le conduit étroit (10, 49, 58, 88).
