A disk playback device provides a space above and below a selected disk held in a disk holder. A turntable and optical pickup reside within the space. The turntable is moved inward in the space from a storage position to chuck, and withdraw, the selected disk from its disk holder to a playback position in which the axis of the turntable is within the outline of disks stored in disk holders. The storage position places the axis of the turntable outside the outline of disks stored in the disk holders. In a single play mode, a disk not stored in a disk holder is moved directly from outside the disk playback device to the playback position where it is chucked and played. On conclusion of single play, the disk is transported out of the disk playback device without being resident in a disk holder.

After the playback of the disc is finished, the disc is again clamped, and is returned to a predetermined position by the clamper transfer mechanism. A mass loader (10) stores a plurality of cartridges (14) for loading a selected one of the cartridges (14) into an optical disk reader (12). The loader (10) comprises a magazine carrier (18) and a cartridge loading apparatus (28). The cartridges (14) are stored in a vertical and parallel orientation within slots in a magazine (16) which is then inserted into the magazine carrier (18). The magazine carrier (18) depends from a follower nut (52) which travels along a lead screw (50) in a direction transverse to the parallel orientation of the cartridges (14). As the leadscrew (50) turns, the follower nut (52) travels therealong to move the magazine (16) into the correct position to ioad the selected one of the cartridges (14) into the reader (12). After the magazine is properly positioned, another lead screw (30) is driven to propel another follower nut (32) therealong. The follower nut (32) has a loading pin (40) protruding therefrom which engages the selected one of the cartridges (14) for loading. The leadscrew (30) is then driven to propel the cartridge (14) via the pin (40) on the follower nut (32) into the reader (12).

To provide an optical disk device having the superior vibration characteristic by preventing the vibration of a rotating arm. A desired optical disk 12 is selected from the plurality of optical disks 12 which are stacked and accommodated. The rotating arm 30 is rotated to a working space provided for the desired optical disk 12. A turntable 31 is positioned, and an optical head 34 is moved to perform the recording/reproduction. Because the tip part of the rotating arm 30 of a cantilever structure is supported by a support member 40 extending along the axial line CL of the optical disk 12, it has a structure supported by both ends. Thus, the vibration of the rotating arm 30 can be prevented. Because the support member 40 extends along the axial line CL of the optical disk 12, it passes through a holding hole 12a at the center of the optical disk 12 and a notch 22 provided at the center of a tray 20, without interference on its way, thereby supporting the rotating arm 30.
