A disk drive (102) stores multimedia data in long spiral data tracks. The tracks on opposite surfaces of the disk (201) spiral in opposite directions, so that a track on one surface can be read as the actuator (205) sweeps in, and a track on the opposite surface can be read as the actuator sweeps out. Because the actuator only follows spiral tracks without performing long seek operations, the actuator motor (207) can be reduced in size and stresses on actuator bearings and other parts are reduced. Additionally, due to reduced disturbances associated with seeks, it is possible to follow tracks more closely and therefore reduce the width of individual tracks. Further cost reductions are accomplished by spinning the disks at a slower speed and reducing the size of the spin motor (203) accordingly. Finally, data density can be increased simply because multimedia data does not require the same low error rate as conventional data. Preferably, a group of disk drives optimized for multimedia data is used to form a video-on-demand system. Compressed, interleaved portions of a video presentation, such as a motion picture, are stored in blocks on the spiral tracks. The drives read the blocks on one spiral track at a time from beginning to end, placing the data from these blocks in a set of buffers corresponding to different short time intervals. Video signals are output from the buffers. Any short time interval of the presentation can be accessed on demand by switching to the appropriate buffer.

In an information storage device being capable of operation in a velocity control mode and a tracking control mode, a head driver drives a movable part of a head in a track-traverse direction, a track controller controls a tip of the head to follow the center of a track on an information storage medium, and an off-track detecting element detects the departure of the tip of the head from the center of a track. When the departure is detected during tracking control mode, the velocity control mode is selected to effect control over the track traverse velocity to keep it to a relatively small value (substantially zero), and when the track traverse velocity is reduced to the small value the tracking control mode is turned on.

A plurality of probes (12₁ to 12 n ) are disposed on a portion of the first lever body (10) to oppose the recording medium (22) at a predetermined interval, and detect a change in state at predetermined positions on the recording medium (22) as a change in tunnel current or a change in three-dimensional pattern. A voltage applying circuit (39, 40) alternately applies predetermined voltages to the piezoelectric driving sections of the first and second lever bodies (10, 20) to separately drive the plurality of probes (12₁ to 12 n ) in different directions, thereby three-dimensionally scanning the recording medium (22).
