A user interface for a medical instrument such as a dialysis machine is described which uses both a touch screen and at least one hard key off of the touch screen to effectuate a change in a parameter associated with the operation of the machine or the treatment session. The user interface is connected to a central computer control system having a host microprocessor and a backup safety microprocessor. The hard key is directly wired to the safety microprocessor. After the user selects a new parametric value on the touch screen, the user presses a hard key. The host and safety microprocessors implement a verification routine to insure that the entered parameter is appropriate for the patient's treatment and the display on the touch screen. If the verification procedure ends in a positive result, the user is prompted to presses a second hard key to confirm the change, causing an additional verification check to be preformed. If the additional verification check is successful, the parametric value is entered into a memory (such as a hard disk) storing instructions for operation of the medical instrument.

Ein einfach aufgebautes und zuverlässig abdichtendes Verschlußelement (10) wird erfindungsgemäß dadurch geschaffen, daß das Verschlußelement (10) eine Wandung (14) umfaßt, die einen selbsttätig schließenden schlitzförmigen Einschnitt (141) aufweist, der im geschlossenen Zustand keimdicht abschließt, und daß Befestigungsmittel vorgesehen sind, die an die Wandung (14) angrenzen und mittels derer das Verschlußelement (10) mit einem Anschluß (42) verbindbar ist. Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ferner die Verwendung des erfindungsgemäßen Dichtelementes (10) zum sterilen Verschluß von Anschlüssen medizinischer Artikel sowie medizinische Artikel mit einem oder mehreren Anschlüssen zur Zu- und/oder Abführung eines Fluids, deren Anschlüsse mit einem erfindungsgemäßen Verschlußelement (10) versehen sind.

A dialysis device (10) embodies a hermetically sealed sample chamber formed by a gasket (12) with dialysis membranes (14, 16) affixed to each side in substantially parallel relationship. The gasket (12) is impermeable to the sample being dialyzed, but is penetrable and reusable such that a needle can be inserted through the gasket (12) into the thickness and then withdrawn without sample being permitted to leak. The gasket (12) is of sufficient thickness to accommodate insertion of a needle. The device (10) is fitted into a rigid housing (20) containing windows (24, 26) exposing the dialysis membranes (14, 16) and a channel (34) parallel to the dialysis membranes (14, 16) for directing a needle into the gasket (12) in a direction substantially perpendicular to the edge of the gasket (12) so that the needle can access the chamber without contacting the surface of the membranes (14, 16).

A load suspension and weighing system for a removable reservoir unit of a portable dialysis machine includes a centrally located flexure assembly. The flexure assembly includes magnets and a number of flexure rings which allow for movement of the magnets about a fixed circuit board. Sensors in the circuit board sense changes in the magnetic field as the magnets move in relation to the circuit board. The magnetic field changes produce a voltage output which is used by a processor to generate weight calculations. The top of the flexure assembly is attached to the interior of the dialysis machine. The entirety of the reservoir unit is suspended by a first internal frame that is attached to the bottom of the flexure assembly. Having a single flexure assembly positioned above the reservoir unit provides more accurate weight measurements while also preventing damage to the assembly from water spillage.

The degasser can have a degassing membrane 111 that can be constructed from nonporous silica. The degassing membrane can be highly permeable to carbon dioxide but less permeable oxygen or nitrogen gases. Pressure in the dialysate and the degasser can be controlled in order to control the amount of carbon dioxide and other gases in dialysate leaving the degasser. The degassing membrane may be placed in a degassing module in a dialysate flow path to remove dissolved carbon dioxide from the dialysate.
