A piston (67) is slidably mounted in a piston chamber and operated by oil supplied to a piston oil chamber (69) for engaging the drive drum, with the driven drum. A centrifugal force oil chamber (75) is formed in the fluid operated clutch opposite to the piston oil chamber (69) and is supplied with oil through an oil supply passage having a check valve so as to maintain oil pressure in the centrifugal force oil chamber in the absence of centrifugal force.

The drive and driven plates (46, 47) are engageable with each other by the pressure plate (45) pressed by the piston (42) moved in response to a hydraulic pressure supplied to the hydraulic pressure chamber (43). An assisting member (44) is disposed between the piston (42) and the pressure plate (45) and comprises an annular array of rigid assisting levers and a retaining plate holding the assisting levers together. The assisting member (44) has a radially inner end pressable by the piston (42), a radially outer end held in engagement with the clutch drum (41), and a radially intermediate region engageable with a projection (45a) of the pressure plate (45). Each assisting lever serves as a lever with the radially outer end as a fulcrum for boosting the force applied from the piston (42) and transmitting the boosted force to the pressure plate (45).

The input shaft (24) carries a spring-released, hydraulically engageable disc clutch (32), which when engaged, transfers power from the clutch (32) to a multi-grooved belt drive sheave (30) which is coupled to respective driven sheaves (42, 36) of the crop cutting, conveying and/or processing components (46, 40) by a drive belt (34). The clutch (32) is mounted on the input shaft (24) outboard of the drive sheave (30) and the shaft (24) is provided with a fluid passage (124) that extends inwardly from its outboard end and is coupled in fluid communication with a piston (112) for the clutch (32). A slip fitting (126) is releasably coupled to the outboard end of the shaft (24) and is adapted for being coupled to a conduit for conveying fluid to or returning fluid from the clutch piston (112).

A variable speed fan drive (10) including a cantilevered support (18) and axially spaced bearings (72,74,76) for mounting an input drive member (39) with a cylinder portion (52) and an output fan hub assembly (56) for rotational movement relative to each other and to the support. A modulatable wet type clutch assembly (96) is operably effective to couple the input drive member (39) to the fan hub assembly (56). The output speed of the fan hub (58) is regulated by the axial compressive force a clutch engaging member (104) applies against interleaved members (98,100) of the clutch assembly (96). The clutch engaging member cooperates with the cylinder portion (52) of the input drive member to define an expansible chamber (108) so designed that all clutch clamping forces are confined within the drive member (39). As such, substantially no axial thrust load is exerted on the axially spaced bearings (72,74,76) during clutch application. The drive unit may further include cooperative elements (176,178) arranged on the drive member (39) and the fan hub assembly (56) for preventing belt cord debris from becoming entangled thereabout.
