The plural filter plates (161 - 166) are formed such that the thickness of each filter plate (161 - 166) is successively doubled with the thinnest filter plate defined as a reference. The adjusting means has a pair of moving in/out mechanisms for moving, every its half number, the plural filter plates in and out from both sides of the X-ray passing space.

An x-ray beam hardening filter (100) is disclosed. The X-ray beam hardening filter (100) comprises a support member (110) and a beam hardening sheet (120), the beam hardening sheet (120) having a multidimensional array of regularly spaced apertures (130). The apertures (130) are configured to have an x-ray transmissive quality. An actuator (300), engaging the support member (110), is capable of moving the multidimensional array of apertures (130) into or out of a path of an X-ray beam, thereby selectively introducing varying levels of X-ray energy filtration. In one embodiment, multiple layers of beam hardening sheets (610, 620) are added to the X-ray beam hardening filter (100) to create additional levels of X-ray energy filtration. Advantages of the X-ray beam hardening filter (100) include the relatively small distance the X-ray beam hardening filter (100) must move in order to absorb the incident X-ray beam, the ability to introduce varying levels of X-ray filtration, and the compact structure of the X-ray beam hardening filter (100).

A K-filter (1) is the one attached to an apparatus for serial high-speed rotatography for photographing a specimen by use of X rays. The filter comprises two K-containers (5a and 5b) in which a space is defined for fluidly containing a fluid substance transmitting no radiation, and a radiation permeable region (2) formed between the two K-containers (5a and 5b). The K-containers (5a and 5b) are pivotally supported by a supporting member (1a) and are of an inversion type which allows the radiation permeable region sides of the K-containers to move. Therefore, when this apparatus is rotated at a high speed to more than 180 DEG , it is possible to conduct filtering under any conditions such as an inclined posture, not the horizontal posture, under which potographing is started.

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided an X-ray filter which significantly reduces low energy radiation normally absorbed by the examination object without significantly affecting the desired high energy radiation. The filter is comprised of one or more materials (12) containing as the major component elements selected from the group consisting of aluminum and elements having atomic number between 26 and 50 with the filter being selected to have X-ray filtering characteristics such that the intensity of X-rays having energies of 50 keV are reduced by about 8 % to about 35 % of the normal radiation levels. As a result of the construction immediately above, the filter of the present invention filters energy from the X-ray beam which is usually absorbed by the examination object and does not contribute to the radiographic image of the examination object. This is achieved with little, if any, increased loading of the X-ray tube which would otherwise reduce its effective life.
