The magnetic film (103) for the magnetic disc is required to have an improved squareness ratio in order to achieve the faster access time than before. This requirement is met by providing a middle layer (102) between the disc substrate (101) and the magnetic thin film (103) according to the known technology. In this invention, the improvement in squareness ratio was accomplished by considering the arrangement of the material forming the middle layer (102). Namely, the middle layer (102) is formed by sputtering so that it has the diagonal micro arrangement. The middle layer (102) can be produced from a variety of materials to produce the desired effect.

A thin film magnetic head is characterised by the use of a substrate predominantly comprising zirconia. In preferred embodiments, the substrate is a ceramic compact comprising 4 to 45% by volume of a component A, 55 to 98% by volume of a component B and at most 3% by volume of unavoidable impurities, wherein component A is at least one member selected from the group consisting of carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides, carboxides, oxynitrides and carboxynitrides of Group IVa, Va and Via elements of Periodic Table and mixtures or solid solutions thereof, and component B is Zr0 2 consisting of at least 70% by weight of tetragonal and/or cubic zirconia, the balance being monoclinic zirconia. Preferably at least one member selected from the group consisting of oxides of Group llla elements of Periodic Table, CaO and MgO, and mixtures thereof is dissolved to form a solid solution.

A laminated film comprising (A) a layer 5 composed of a thermoplastic resin and (B) a layer 1 composed of a thermoplastic resin containing fine particles therein, wherein a discontinuous skin having a height of 50 to 1,000 A is formed on the outer surface of the layer (A) and the outer surface of the layer (B) has a surface Ra value of 0.005 to 0.040µ. The laminated film is very valuable as a base film of a magnetic recording tape having a ferromagnetic metal thin film formed on the surface of the layer (A), especially a video tape, because it has a good running property and is excellent in the electromagnetic transformation performances.
